Elflings

Elflings is a video game being designed by Dan Norder. Low-rez pixel art, Roguelike sensibility.

It's the Roguelike Celebration 2025 call for presenters!

The virtual conference will be Oct 25-26. Presentations are either live or pre-recorded. Talks are 30 minutes or a quick 10 minutes and can be about roguelikes, similar games or procedural generation. Proposals must be submitted by June 30th, and you can make multiple submissions!

I gave a talk last year on Robotlike games. You could talk about your game!

@isaackuo

Czech playwright Karel Čapek wrote the 1920 play Rossum’s Universal Robots, the origin of the term robot. He based it upon the word for forced labor. A lot of early sci-fi tries to emulate the Slavic pronunciation. Rod Serling talked about ro-bits in a lot of the original Twilight Zone episodes, among others. These days anyone saying that is usually trying to be funny, probably from how Futurama liked to make fun of it. youtube.com/clip/UgkxjIdm-0cST

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!

This was an early doodle from back when I was learning Nintendo style. This isn't compliant with the NES color system, though. The figures have 8x8 pixel heads on bodies the same size, so it's quite similar to the Elflings ultra-low resolution style.

Pixelated versions of Santa and Mrs. Claus standing with a variety of Christmas elves and a gingerbread man under a line of lit Christmas lights, with unlit Christmas lights below them. Very low resolution. It would be Nintendo Entertainment System style except there are too many colors for it to actually work on that system.

@docpop Awesome art by Erol Otus! On that particular piece, did you have to get Hasbro to sign off on it, or was getting the artist's permission for commercial reuse all that was legally requirered?

@synlogic DEI tries to pierce the current constant racism that people refuse to acknowledge: the gut feeling against people they don't trust, who just happen to be mostly women and minorities. Identical resumes are consistently thought as better choices with white male names on top. You've no doubt seen how many assume any minorities with a job *must be* unworthy of them. If you find yourself agreeing with Trump, what are the odds it's because Trump is suddenly smart? Seriously?

I bet he watched a cartoon coyote try to blow up a roadrunner once too. Can we expect a breathless article about that?

Today's Roguelike Celebration livestream is on a different page than the link I shared yesterday. Best to just click youtube.com/@roguelikecelebrat and look for the Live video link at the top of the page. That also has info with links to all the old presentations that are already online. Presentations from this weekend will be archived there later.

You can also buy tickets / donate / get merch. Well worth it!

Fun little monsters from my presentation this weekend, done in the Elflings retro pixel art style. They are basically Nintendo-style graphics in size and colors.

Can you believe it? Roguelike Celebration 2024 is THIS WEEKEND (Oct 19-20)!

PLUS, we'll have a no-agenda pre-party in the MUD on Friday night, because who doesn't want to spend more time at the goblin market? (Did we mention it's a goblin market this year?)

I can't believe it's almost here. My presentation "Chase: The BASIC Language Proto-Roguelike" will be Saturday night, Oct. 19, at the Roguelike Celebration, an online event. Learn more than you wanted to about escaping robots and avoiding electric fences. And zombies. And orcs.

Here's my demake of Princess Peach.

It might not be obvious that Elflings graphics are *even smaller* than the original Super Mario Bros. sprites until you see them side by side like this. The extreme color limitations are the same as with the original Nintendo.

And, yes, I should be working on #GBJam or my presentation on Robotlike games (Chase and its variants) for the 2024 #RoguelikeCelebration -- get your tickets now!

@mid_kid OK, if there's that risk then yeah, maybe something like that would be necessary. Or I am just way overthinking what's not even a real Game Boy game. The graphic limitations are only the number of colors and overall size, not the full rules of real GB graphics. Maybe I should just treat the D-pad the same way.

@clayote @xot @mid_kid @getter7seven

Thanks, everyone. You saved me from either creating a totally unnecessary workaround for making diagonal moves on a Game Boy interface or throwing them out completely.

Game Boy fans: Can the D-Pad easily do 8-directional movement? I feel like I used one a while ago that allowed you to press two arrow keys at once to get diagonal moves.There is surprisingly contradictory info online. I'm trying to do a quick game for the Game Boy Jam -- itch.io/jam/gbjam-12 -- with new art per the rules (so tiny! so few colors!). I don't want to implement something that disqualifies the game. #ihavemyreasons #lowrez #GBJam #gamedev #pixels #retrocomputing

Gameboy-style pixel graphics. At the top on a black background is (left-right) a Game Boy, a male elf facing front, a female elf facing front, a skeleton facing front, a male elf facing back, a female elf facing back, a skeleton facing back and a tiny fur tree. On the bottom on a near-white background is a set of green directional arrows, a set of magenta arrows, a set of black arrows designating being pressed in, and below that are buttons A and B and also depressed versions of the buttons.

@arielsan Wow, this is visually stunning!

@lonespelunker

Lending is fine, but they started giving out more copies of a book than they actually bought and just pretended it was lending. That's what was determined to be illegal.

Yes, training is legal. You aren't republishing the original.

"Okay, then, what’s to stop the IA from simply creating a trivial AI from a book that just spits out the book’s text?" Copyright law.

"Or making the “training data” for a one-book-trained LLM available for download?" Again, copyright law.

I'm excited that the Roguelike Celebration has selected my presentation for this year's event! It covers the Robot-like games that started with the BASIC-language program Chase in the 1970s. In many ways this can be thought of as a proto-roguelike game. The event will be Oct. 19-20. Don't miss the free online preview Sept. 8. See roguelike.club/ for info. (Other speeches TBA.)

Image titled "CHASE." It has a 15x10 grid of green on black text characters (X for walls, * for the player and + for enemy robots) showing an old BASIC computer-language game as it would appear on a computer monitor in the 1970s. Next to it is a 15X15 grid of 8-bit pixel graphic icons of walls, a player and robots showing a similar game as it would appear on a Nintendo Entertainment System. At the bottom, text reads "Robot-like games".

Or at least we assume it's magical.
