Aerospace engineer, maker and terrible amateur programmer. I will probably toot when I've made something, mainly 3d printing and plotting; if you want to make what I've made you'll probably find it on Printables: printables.com/social/152251-p

I am also on Pixelfed: pixey.org/fastness

Hallelujah! AutoCAD's DWG is a closed format that Linux CAD apps can't properly read. Well, there's apparently now a freeware Linux utility, ODA File Converter, that allows you to convert from DWG to DXF. Get the .appimage from here: opendesign.com/guestfiles/oda_

LibreCAD and other Linux apps I tested can now read these common files fine as DXF! A great solution for my brother too, who I recently converted to Linux too.

My husband (@KevBot) and I took several classes on things like Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator and we were always making weird stuff purely for our own entertainment.

These are some of my favorites:

(1) Assignment where we were given a random art movement and had to create a poster in that style. Kev got Constructivism and I got Pop Art.

(2) Assignment where we had to make an ad for a company/product using a famous painting. Kev made an Osh-Kosh ad with a Renaissance painting and I threw some shade at Jackson Pollack.

Poster for a hot dog eating contest with a fist holding a hotdog in a constructivist style.Poster for a band called Ümloud with pop art illustrations of a man and woman and a drawing of a cassette tape announcing a cassette release party.Fake ad for Osh-Kosh with a Renaissance painting with overalls photoshopped onto an ugly baby and a tag line that says “even ugly babies deserve cute clothes.”Fake ad for Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser where the eraser is “cleaning up” a Jackson Pollack painting.

#dwp #pip I swear I'm going mad. The government keeps saying they're trying to cut PIP to help people into work. Newspapers are taking that argument at face value and writing from that perspective; cutting pip pushes disabled people into work.
PIP IS NOT AN OUT OF WORK BENEFIT. RECIPIENTS ARE OFTEN ABLE TO WORK *BECAUSE* THEY GET PIP. CUTTING PIP WILL MAKE IT *HARDER* FOR DISABLED PEOPLE TO WORK.

GAAAAAH

Stonechat. Finished wood engraving, first test print, which I'm very pleased with and the photo that the engraving is based on, taken on one of our regular walks on Ilkley Moor.

100x100mm lemonwood block engraved with a stonechat perched on a young, growing and unfurling, bracken frond, with a foreground of bracken and other plants, receding through shrubs along a path to a stile in a drystone wall, with more moorland beyond. The bird locks inquisitively at me. An engraving tool and a pencil are included for scale.A print of the engraving in black ink, made by hand burnishing on Somerset satin paper..My photo of the stonechat, one of many on Ilkley Moor.

Today’s finally the day that Daniel Hannan, famously such a predictive monster mind, said we should all look forward to.

It's 24 June, 2025, and Britain is marking its annual Independence Day celebration. As the fireworks stream through the summer sky, still not quite dark, we wonder why it took us so long to leave. The years that followed the 2016 referendum didn't just reinvigorate our economy, our democracy and our liberty. They improved relations with our neighbours.

hey, if you enjoy the #USCSB safety videos, the current administration is putting them on the chopping block with a reported $0 allocated for FY2025 and appropriating their emergency fund for the costs of shutting down the USCSB agency.

they put out a video in an attempt to justify themselves, but if you're in the US then please call and/or write to your congresspeople and ask them to back the CSB. their budget is miniscule for the impact they have.

Happy #solstice

Just took down the tin can pinhole camera I installed on a lamppost on the winter solstice.

Little bit of water damage - need better drainage holes. And need to angle it up a bit more, or put the hole further up so as not to miss the peak.

Monotone image in bluey-green, showing the sun's path over the course of six months. The paths form a series of smooth bright curves stacked on top of each each. The outline of some trees mark the horizon. There is not much detail in the lower darker, lower half of the image. Along the top edge is some water damage.

Pip for my mum who literally couldn't use her right hand side but to drag it along with her, and who survived a man who beat her for 17 years (and folk wondered why her skeleton had so many historic fractures they mistakenly thought her brittle bones had been going on for decades) pip meant shopping delivered to her home in packaging she could open with one hand (they tried to argue that meant she was self sufficient for 2 years - she was not) and ultimately in meals on wheels which also came with a friendly face while she ate. Those nights I got some sleep with a fraction less guilt.

Think about your elderly and where it might end up. Personal independence matters even in old age. Now imagine being absent that dignity during your working life and suddenly you're unable to keep that job further afield because now your income has dropped £400 a month which you used for a mobility vehicle.

It's easy to start programming with microcontrollers. Do you remember these project kits? I do—it's how I got started learning about electronics and circuits!

In today's video I made a remote control that explodes things! How? Not magic, but microcontrollers: youtube.com/watch?v=Sd42q3OaOrE

@geerlingguy I had one based around a breadboard but with spring terminals for pots, switches, LEDs... Still use it sometimes because all the built in stuff is handy

Chas & Dave trivia:

They also worked as session musicians, and played guitar and bass on "I got the…" by Labi Siffre

Which was later sampled for Eminem's "My Name Is"

So one of Dr Dre's most famous beats effectively contains a Chas & Dave sample.

You're welcome

@mcbridejc I have nowhere near the skills to self host anything, I have a web server that comes with email when I pay a moderate amount of money each quarter for someone else to do the work. When I first started it some time in the 2000s I managed to get it linked to my domain and I basically haven't touched it since

@mcbridejc I'm not knowledgeable enough to diagnose, everything on my site was downloaded many times over. I have cheap hosting that I use mainly for email, and it wasn't set up for this. The issue is that their business includes the assumption that this is my problem, they can help themselves because it's on a public facing website. I'm now wondering if I should remove the contents to prevent it happening again; should everyone else (and what used to be an open web) lose because of them?

Chris Lynasfastness
2025-06-19

@mcbridejc the AI companies crawled my website so hard they used up my bandwidth for a month and caused my email not to work for a couple of weeks. I assume I'm allowed to be annoyed about this? Yes it's public but there are consequences that mean others are paying for their business model

@dtl @jonty @libbymiller I remember having to nip out to Milton Keynes for something I forgot (in 2014 I think?) and navigation started with something like "first drive to Zeebrugge and get on a ferry" before changing to "ok, next left at the roundabout"
