🎶 Weekly challenge time: Write your PERSONAL SOUNDTRACK! 🎬

Whether it's a life-defining anthem, day-in-the-life “montage” music, or a moment's vibe, capture a part of you in song. 🌟

Think "Tapestry" (Carole King) or "Life is a Highway" (Tom Cochrane).

What's your theme song? 🎧

🎶 Weekly songwriting challenge: PUBLIC DOMAIN! 🚨

Incorporate something from the PUBLIC DOMAIN into a new song. Borrow a melody, twist a lyric, or flip a folk tune on its head.

Examples:
💡 ‘Greensleeves’ as a metal anthem.
💡 ‘Twinkle Twinkle’ as an existential crisis.
💡 ‘Scarborough Fair’ as a diss track.

What's your take? Post it to FAWM.ORG!

🎸 It's National Guitar Day! 🎸

Your guitar is waiting patiently while you doomscroll... so stop pretending you're busy and pick it up! Write a song. Strum some chords. Pen some lyrics. It doesn't have to be a hit, but you might surprise yourself! 🤘

Who knows what could happen with a riff and some inspiration. Or just spend the next 2 hours tuning. Your call. 😏

FAWM ON, FRIENDS!

🎶✨ Weekly challenge time: Try writing a song with MORSE CODE! 📡

Think "YYZ" (Rush) with its airport-code rhythm, or Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 intro (code for "V").💡

Encode a message with rhythm (musical cryptogram anyone?) or use it as a hidden texture like "Planet Claire" (B-52s) or "Landing of the Daleks" (The Earthlings).

Bonus points for hidden messages! 😏

have you ever written a PALINDROME song?

try reflecting letters ("if i dad a hi-fi" by william bottin) or whole words (“i palindrome i” by TMBG). perhaps invent a palindrome band name and make a track for it!

or use a musical palindrome, like a rhythm/melody/progression that’s the same forward and backward.

bonus points for multiple types of palindromes!

when you're done, post it to fawm.org 👈

🌅 Can it really be the LAST WEEKLY SONG PROMPT of the summer!?!? 🌇

"Word painting" 🎨 is the use of music elements that literally represent the meaning of a song's lyrics (or vice versa).

Give it a try!

Examples: “U Can’t Touch This” (MC Hammer — “stop!”), “Bang Bang” (Nancy Sinatra — descending guitar slides), “Shout at the devil” (Mötley Crüe, shouting)

Know any other good examples?

Try writing a song about a transformation, a positive change in yourself, or making the world a better place.

Examples: “Imagine” (John Lennon), “We Are the World” (USA for Africa), “Happy” (Pharrell Williams), “What’s Going On” (Marvin Gaye)

OK, this week's prompt has nothing to do with horses (AFAIK)! 🐎 But try using the i–VII–VI–V chord progression...

Examples: “Sultans of Swing” (Dire Straits), “Sixteen Tons” (Merle Travis), “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor), “Before He Cheats” (Carrie Underwood).

🗓️ WEEKLY SONGWRITING PROMPT! 🎉

This week, try using repeating forms to create lyrical structure in a song section.

Examples: “Hot N Cold” (Katy Perry), “Every Breath You Take” (The Police), “You Belong With Me” (Taylor Swift), “Mo Money, Mo Problems” (Notorious BIG) “Seven Nation Army” (White Stripes).

Happy "Labor Day" to those in the USA! Are you taking time today to write songs or hit barbecues (or both)?

You're not just going to doomscroll the fediverse... are you?

Whoops! 🪝 We caught a "snag" that delayed this week's prompt a few days... But try using a memorable phrase/hook as a starting point for a new song this week!

Examples: “Beat It” (Michael Jackson), “Blister in the Sun” (Violent Femmes), “Just What I Needed” (The Cars).

What are some of your favorite examples?

What is a "response song?" 🤔 Any song you write that tries and answer/respond to another song! Give it a try this week...

Examples: “Flowers” (Miley Cyrus; to "When I Was Your Man" by Bruno Mars), “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels” (Kitty Wells; to "The Wild Side of Life" by Hank Thompson), “This Land is Your Land” (Woody Guthrie; to "God Bless America" by Irving Berlin).
