#Oxford academics drank from cup made from human skull. Decades-long use of chalice at Worcester College highlights violent colonial history of looted human remains.

"So how do I respond to the idea that a place that has been to me and many hundreds of Chevening scholars from across the globe has been such a haven for free enquiry and open expression has been fined for a breach of free speech?"

Rich entrepreneurs who "donate portions of their wealth to favored causes...bask in their status as society’s saviors. Meanwhile, the corporations they own extract wealth on a scale that dwarfs their largess. With one hand they generate supernormal profits by plundering society, and with the other they dole out a few crumbs": nytimes.com/2025/02/03/opinion

It's hard to convey how barrier breaking (and not in a good way) this directive is. Weather and climate is one of the most functioning parts of the UN. We have always collaborated internationally, simply because weather does not respect national borders. Even during the Cold War the US and Russia shared weather observations and sat on joint committees.

To be told not to work with "foreign nationals" is almost to be told to "stop doing your job"

Marxist theorist Michael Burawoy has tragically died on Feb. 3. On his website at Uni Berkeley, this is the last publication of his, listed as forthcoming in Sociological Review: "Why and How Should Sociologists Speak Out on Palestine?" burawoy.berkeley.edu/Settler%20Co... #sociology

Very sad news about the death of Michael Burawoy. This’s a huge loss for the global sociological community. His contribution to sociology has been enormous. His Marxist ethnography of the working classes inspired and influenced my research on workers. socialsciencespace.com/2016/04

@jadp @fulelo According to Wired, the reports of read-only access were not true, they have admin access:

"Despite reporting that suggests that Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force has access to these Treasury systems on a “read-only” level, sources say Elez, who has visited a Kansas City office housing BFS systems, has many administrator-level privileges."

Michael #Burawoy was killed in a hit-and-run car accident. Terrible news. One of the greatest representatives of critical #sociology, an inspiration for me as far as I consider myself a part Zambianist. His „Color of Class in the Copper Mines“ is an invaluable classic and highly relevant still today, not read enough as an on the ground analysis of race and class. I met him once at a conference in Lusaka and he was the nicest and most intellectual stimulating conversationalist. RIP

1/52 Good to see this Guardian Long Read, but as a historical ecologist I would like to add: humans do not just either stay within boundaries or destroy nature. It's often been a positive, dynamic human-nature symbiosis, with humans actively shaping and creating forests & #biodiversity #historicalecology

When the water

gone'
This is climate
breakdowne
This is
Leoncia's storyI didn't know what to save first. All our belongings were submerged, and everything we invested in was washed away because the water came so suddenly. Neither of my children knew how to swim, and the water was over our heads,
so I prioritised saving them. I let go of our
belongings, but I saved our lives. One child
almost lost his life, but thank God we
survived.
Our house had a lot of trees around it, so we
climbed up a tree to survive, using a rope to
secure ourselves. The water kept rising until
it reached my feet. The water was so deep
[but] the Lord took care of us.
My children were crying and there were lots
of logs and wood hitting us. I closed my eyes
until I passed out. At least my family is
whole.
When the water subsided, I saw that our
house was gone. Only the toilet bowl was
left. We had nothing left. My daughter and I
both had big wounds, and the Red Cross gave us medicine.
