Wrote up a little bit of meta-commentary about how I'd love to see more people blogging notes about academic papers they find useful https://simonwillison.net/2025/Jun/13/blogging-about-papers/
Recently a friend asked me why I don't publish my videos on Youtube. I'd get more views.
So I checked my views - and know what: RIGHT, I don't get a lot of views - but most of the #videos on #Peertube show *more* views than I got on Youtube.
Well, the YT algorithm never loved me, I didn't pay for ads, I had no catchy titles (well - I'm not young and pretty either).
But I guess I found my place - **our** place. HERE. - Thanks all of you.
@mxk While I'm absolutely with you with the USA situation I can only give you my interpretation on the kids situation (despite knowing your position very well and understanding that I'm unlikely to change it): It essentially boils down to "Hope dies last".
I'm working and fighting very hard for my kids to have it better than I had it.
Of course, I know that I can only impact a very tiny part of everything that's wrong and it's unlikely that I succeed. But not trying is just not an option for me. I can't accept defeat, yet. If not for me, for my kids.
Otherwise my nihilism would take over and I assume it would create even more damage than preventing the (tiny amount of) damage (I can prevent).
I just submitted a request to DuckDuckGo asking them to add "!gw" as a supported bang for "Google Web" search (i.e. adding &udm=14 to the search so that it takes you directly to the Web tab)
I've been avoiding using !g recently because of the embedded nonsense generator, but it would be useful to have !gw as a fallback for when I don't find something quickly via DDG.

The "faster CPython" team at Microsoft was recently dissolved. My position at Microsoft was eliminated. If anyone has a reason to be disappointed in this, it's me.
So it feels okay for me to ask you to refocus any disappointment you might have about Microsoft's decision. Let's be grateful for a big Python user actually laying down meaningful cash for 4 years in support of a volunteer-driven community project! Let's express our frustration instead in how that doesn't happen more often!
Today is the day! GeoPandas 1.1.0 is out, available on PyPI and conda-forge. This release brings feature parity with shapely 2.1 thanks to a long list of new methods, allows sparse and dense arrays as outputs of spatial index queries and comes with coverage simplification, among many other improvements and fixes. See the full list of changes at https://geopandas.org/en/stable/docs/changelog.html#version-1-1-0-june-1-2025

@brianokken , thanks for your excellent episode on writing stuff down. It is always great to hear other people's thoughts on this, even if its just as a reminder. Especially if it is in this concise format.
For anybody else wanting to listen to it, this is the link: https://testandcode.com/episodes/223-writing-stuff-down

ℹ️ mountains.community ℹ️
I have taken the time to update the accounting information on the mountains.community site.
Per March 1st I have switched to EUR as the main currency, as by far the most bills are coming in euros.

I feel very lucky as the donations exceed the bills, which unfortunately is not the case for all Fediverse instances.
A big thank you to all!
So 85% of the Komoot employees were fired by the new owners (which is their usual thing - they have done it at their other acquisitions as well - buying random SaaS products, fire everyone and then squeeze out the last Pennie’s from the product without investing into new things). What a shame… Enshitification is around the corner.

I was VERY pleasantly surprised by how well my #PyConUS talk resonated! Over the past ~1.5 years I bounced the idea off people of all stripes & got very mixed responses. That helped me to shape the content but also tempered my expectations and I begged everyone who would listen to come to my talk out of fear to speak to an empty room.
I ended up speaking to an standing room only and for the first time in over ten years a talk of mine landed on HN frontpage with largely positive comments. 1/2
Helmut Dietl – „Schtonk!“ (1991)
„Schtonk!“ ist eine fantastische Satire über einen Skandal, der bis heute nachhallt: Über die Hitler-Tagebücher, die Medien und die deutsche Nachkriegsgesellschaft. Das Meisterwerk von Helmut Dietl ist bis heute unerreicht und die Mechanismen der Medien sind noch ganz dieselben. (ARTE)
