This section from @jamesbridle excellent #WaysOfBeing is one example of many insightful comparisons between the natural world and machine intelligence. Would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in artificial intelligence.

This tweet by @alessandro_nai is one of the real life examples of deviating from a preregistration that I use in my new preprint. osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/ha29k Mistakes in a preregistration happen! If they are obvious enough, peers should agree they do not impact the test severity.

Hey, I've created a tutorial on how to draw a boxplot of precomputed statistics in the R programming language. The tutorial shows examples for Base R & the ggplot2 package: statisticsglobe.com/draw-boxpl

@darrylyong yes they are not directly used in promotion decisions but staff can include them when applying to help evidence reflection on their teaching practice. I agree regarding the issues with bias, but am interested in why you think they should correlate with student attainment/performance? For example students might perform poorly in a very well taught course, and vice versa?

Has anyone read both ‘GEB’ and ‘I am a strange loop’ by Hofstadter?

Should I really read GEB first?

Warner was "continually concerned" by the lack of scientific understanding across government departments.

"Throughout the pandemic, I thought that there was a lack of scientific capability within the different teams and groups that I was working with.”

Hi #rstats community - I teach stats and R programming to undergraduate students at a UK university. I am always on the lookout for internships and studentships I can encourage my students to apply for to keep developing.
At the start of another academic year I would love recommendations and suggestions?

I often hear A.I. 'experts' talk about the 3 things that we previously said wouldn't allow A.I. to do when it becomes advanced. I don't see specific reference to it in the usual places (Russell, Tegmark, Kurzweil, Christian)

1. code
2. understand human emotion
3. access the internet

Does anyone know a specific source for this?

Francesca Gino's defense as to why she did not commit fraud is to put the bar to be found guilty *incredibly* high. She wants uni's to have *irrefutable proof* that she *intentionally* messed with the data. She knows: With the bar this high, everyone will get away with fraud.

Having read (and mostly enjoyed) books by Max Tegmark, Stuart Russell, Ray Kurzweil, Brian Christian, Ajay Agrawal and Nick Bostrom in recent months, its been Melanie Mitchell (AI: a guide for thinking humans), D'Iganzio & Klein (Data Feminism) and Erica Thompson (Escape from Model Land) that I think have provided some of the most balanced and insightful perspectives on AI and data science.
