A nuthatch posed for me again today.
A nuthatch clings sideways to a tree trunk. Its blue-ish grey back and warm buff underside sharply defined.

Hmm ⸻ is this Hank from last year? If so, this is their second year, or will be soon, and their next molt should include a red tail.

From this angle, Delicate Arch in Utah looks like one of M. C. Escher's impossible objects.

#BlackAndWhite #Landscape #Desert #Canyon #MonochromeMarch #MonochromeMonday #Monochrome #Photography #Darktable

A black and white portrait photo of a tall natural sandstone arch. The arch is thick on one leg and hour-glass shaped on the other leg. Sky can be seen in between the two legs. It stands on a slightly tilted surface. The camera angle, looking somewhat edge on, creates an optical illusion that the thick and hour-glass shaped legs of the arch are both in front and in back at the same time.

“Cueva de la Arena”

The Cueva de la Arena, in the Los Haitises National Park, is one of the most important points of interest in this protected area. It can only be reached by boat, from a small landing stage that plunges into the sea from its small, charming beach. The cave is some 940 m long, running along…

this something I don't think anyone's really talked about -- not specifically that AI systems are stochastic, but that when juxtaposed with traditional software, where data is static and object-permanent, it's something fundamentally different.

A lot of the marketing falls apart when you realize they're doing a rhetorical slight of hand where they act like the probabilistic text generator is just "more software."

@glyph Even without the "Clyde" problem it's hard to talk about because there's a historical notion of a probabilistic algorithm where you have stochastic behavior operating with proven bounds and a provable distribution of behaviors, and the new type of statistics-based software where the software just sort of does whatever and we don't even discuss it as if it were statistics-based we call it "intelligence"

RE: lingo.lol/@thedansimonson/1161

this is also why LLMs are not "another layer of abstraction". do you need to read the asm output of your compiler every time it runs? no, and having to do so would substantially reduce the value of said compiler

A small flock of Cedar Waxwings came to our old apple trees to eat some softened apples that stayed on the trees all winter long.

Two Cedar Waxwings perch on branches of an old apple tree are eating an apple that has been in the tree all winter long. The branches are dull grey with swollen buds. The background is out of focus sky and more tree branches.

if ai was really about productivity they’d be talking about doing more faster with the same workforce, not reducing the workforce

Lazy web request:

I’m trying to find back pain management advice that is based on scientific and medical research, rather than quackery.

I have seen that “The Back Book” from NHS exists, but it’s from 2005.

Anyone have an up-to-date, credible resource on back pain management to recommend? Thanks.
