I managed to get coverage at work today, so I could attend one of the No Kings rallies. Here in the Rochester NY area, there were five rallies at different locations around the county. I attended the one in the town of Irondequoit, which was billed as an "Un-Parade". People lined up for about a mile along Lakeshore Boulevard, which runs along the shore of Lake Ontario.

People were in good spirits, waving home-made signs and U.S. flags. Passing vehicles mostly honked, waved, smiled, gave a thumbs-up, or waved flags of their own. I only saw about a dozen rude drivers who gave us the finger. Seeing how many drivers were cheering the event was very encouraging.

For me, the highlight was a musician who walked along the route playing "This Land Is Your Land" on a guitar and harmonica. Lots of people sang along.

When I got home, I checked to see whether any of our local news outlets had covered the events. I was pleased to see fairly good coverage from the local paper, the Democrat & Chronicle. According to the article, "thousands" of people attended the Irondequoit event, though it doesn't specify exactly how many thousands.

Here's the D&C article:

Also, a couple of pictures I took, and the Irondequoit portion of the article in a screenshot.

An excerpt from the Rochester NY Democrat and Chronicle article about the June 14 2025 No Kings rally. The article covered five locations around the county. This excerpt describes the rally in the town of Irondequoit.

"In Irondequoit [NY], thousands of people gathered along Lake Shore Boulevard at Durand Eastman Park. The sounds of crashing waves from Lake Ontario filled the air as protestors of all ages and backgrounds held signs and ‘waved American flags at the passing cars.

"A group of people created a circle on the park grass, singing along with a man playing the guitar. Waving their American flags in the air, the group sang 'This Land is Your Land' and the National Anthem.

"Roy Jimenez, a Vietnam Veteran, recently moved back home to Rochester after living in California for over 50 years. He said he was happy to see that all of the local craft stores ran out of poster board before the protests began.

"We are the people, and the people want democracy,” Jimenez said.A photo showing a portion of the crowd at the Irondequoit NY No Kings rally. It is taken from behind the crowd, and shows the backs of people lined up along the road, as though watching a parade. Some hold up signs, others wave U.S. flags. The line extends into the distance in this photo. The actual line extended in both directions for a distance of about a mile.A picture of myself holding my sign at the Irondequoit NY No Kings rally on June 14 2025. The sign says "We the People Standing Up for Our Democracy", with a picture of the U.S. flag. The picture cuts off most of my face, but shows my hands holding the sign, and some brown sleeves. In the background is a gravel area with orange construction barrels.A musician at the Irondequoit NY No Kings rally on June 14 2025. The picture shows a man walking on the shoulder of a road, with trees visible behind him across the street. The man is playing "This Land Is Your Land" on an acoustic guitar, accompanying himself on a harmonica held up to his mouth by a holder. He is wearing dark jeans, a dark Tshirt, sneakers, and an unbuttoned plaid flannel shirt. The mouth and lower part of his face are visible, but the upper part of his face is cut off at the top of the photo.

@Wolf

When you're ready to go boating, for last-minute prices I recommend latelink.com

I used that site back when I still hired (rented) boats.

LateLink aggregates all the big and small hireboat companies.

The site is hilariously, awfully unusable, in the style of the 1990s Internet. 😁 It's an adventure just finding the best boat for you. But it's fitting because narrowboating is a throwback activity.

@ajaykaul10 except Starc. When he took the target past 250, I thought that would be the match-winning innings. #WTCFinal

@pikesley I'm surprised no one mentioned this match being Australia's first walk through the Long Room since 2023. (Or did I miss it?)

@perkinsy do they use different cameras? In the US we get (via Willow) the Sky Sports feed from the UK, which includes Mel Jones, Nasser Hussein, and Dinesh Karthik among the commentators.

@perkinsy "batter" sounds natural to me, maybe because it's familiar from baseball. The one I can't get my head around is "nightwatcher" which sounds like something out of a horror movie.

@badambassador @BicycleBen the video is good for Surrey but the commentators don't follow the action too closely, at least in the County Championship matches.

@blogdiva post-championship riots happen in North America as well.

@capntransit of course the sensible thing would be to have a regular connecting bus service, e.g., from the Trailways station on North Front Street, given the number of people who likely come from Kingston to take that train.

2025-06-04

@capntransit the whole thing seems crazy, especially telling people to chase after the train with their cars. When my mom lived in Kingston, I would often take the train to Rhinecliff to visit, and pretty much the only option was for someone to come pick me up. That's probably a common use case, so it's weird to charge those people the same to park as someone who leaves their car there all day.

I'm genuinely SO excited about the new ocean map that will be at the heart of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich when this hall reopens on June 7th. It's an unusual ocean-focussed map with so much detail, and it's just brilliant. 🌊🌊 Below is a video sneak peak.

And if you're anywhere near Greenwich, do bring your family to the excellent (and free) World Ocean Day event on June 7th - there will be loads to see and do.

Ugh, #mozilla is discontinuing #pocket, which was still useful for rendering a lot of articles legible. It seems from their explanation that what was useful to users was never what they thought was important:"What began as a read-it-later app evolved into something much bigger. After Mozilla acquired Pocket in 2017, we invested in building our content curation and recommendation capabilities..." support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/f

@BicycleBen the frequency with which I travel to the UK is comparable to the frequency with which they redesign all the money and stop accepting the old cash.

@timrichards they built it in between the summer I spent in Potsdam and the 2+ years I lived in Berlin. It took a while to get used to there being a Hauptbahnhof.

2025-05-25

@partim that kind of entrance fee is less bearable when you're there with a family of four (although perhaps there's a family discount, which tends to be more common on that side of the pond).
