I wrote something recently on my blog about how sufferers of extroversion were affected by the pandemic.

Carole Cadwalladr is an always-relevant observer of the relationships between tech, politics, and media. She was put under incredible pressure by those whose dark activities she exposed, and she stood her ground. A woman of impeccable moral and professional standing.

Cadwalladr is our Cassandra. We must listen to her.

When the trust owning The Guardian daily newspaper sold off The Observer (the Sunday paper), Cadwalladr was one of the many fine journalists who got axed. This is her last piece for the (old) Observer.

Like everything she writes, it is essential reading. Uncomfortable and important reading.

I saw it because someone I follow boosted it. That's why I like mastodon.

@cstross
lovely!
Reading the final paragraph I felt a vague echo of D.N.A.'s planet Krikkit. I wonder if it was intentional or coincidental; after all what quiet introverted people could look upon wider "civilization" and NOT be prompted to wield a metaphorical meat cleaver and scream SLAUGHTER THEM ALL.

Don't worry about the void, it knows it's job. Probably wearing it's noise cancelling headphones.

@noodle thanks that cleared some space.
I have now exited 'panic mode' and feel more confident about poking around to figure out what's going on.
The multiple X11 folders I was seeing are links so should not be taking up excessive space.
Still not sure why I've suddenly gone from 78% to 98% used space in my root partition though.
The phantom X11 links are timestamped at the exact time of the update. I'll keep investigating.

EDIT: SOLVED - my fault entirely - not a problem with update.
I now know more than I ever wanted to about apache error logs.
Thanks to those who offered suggestions or boosted.
Now back to teaching myself PHP - without so may errors! πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
====================

Looking for help from linux mint gurus - an update ate my disk!

I just allowed update manager to update ghostscript and now I'm getting a warning that I have 0 space left in my root file system.
My /bin directory seems to contain recursive X11 folders. I'm not sure how many because I'm worried about messing with it in case I cause more problems.

I'd appreciate simple suggestions about the best way to solve this. I'm ok with using synaptic and even the terminal (if I really have to). But if you're going to ask me to delete random file please explain why.
I've been using Linux for years but I don't consider myself an expert.

I'm running Linux mint 21.3 cinnamon on an AMD Athlon with a 500GB HDD.

Yeah I'm hoping that it's going to be just an economic/tech implosion over there, but I lived my teenage years in the 60s with the constant threat of nuclear war looming like a storm cloud over everything. It's terrifying to watch the clown's incompetence linked to Putin's outright malice.

I thought not obeying your parents was the role description of every child over about 10, and some start even younger. I mean how else are we supposed to know we're raising them properly? :smilee:

2025-03-23

@mydalon
I doubt if they'd target me, or any ordinary individual specifically, and I'd like to think things won't get to the point where they target entire countries... but these days who knows.
If they do get to that point we'll have more to worry about than internet communications.

I think I see what you mean. When I read about this previously I was reassured by the built in redundancy in the system of physical servers because I was thinking in terms of it surviving a physical threat. But if the threat is the CORRUPTION of the network at the top level then i suppose that will just replicate automatically.

@dannycolin @Linux
I'm no networking expert but I believe the original point of the arpanet was that if one part of the network is destroyed the rest of the structure just routes around the damage.
That's why I have chosen to use locally (AUS) based infrastructure and services for my social accounts and my brand new domain name.
Australia let's all of us who can prove we are citizens register a .au address in our own names.
So I hope lynfox.au will keep running even if the American Empire shoots itself in the foot.

Yeah looks like all Albo needs to do for a guaranteed win in the election is cancel the AUKUS deal and tell Trump to fuck off over this and any other gangster moves he threatens to strongarm us into.
While Mr potato head is playing mini-trump.

is it OK to use the Poster Union image (that I pinched from your IPUA blog) in the footer of my web page?
