My kid just WhatsApped from his German exchange trip. They had to call an ambulance for him.
He has food poisoning, was very pale and nauseous. He was dehydrated and his blood pressure was dropping.
He's fine now but I wanted to share this because it has the most Western Europe Is a Civilized Place ending ever.
The paramedics came to the mall, took him into the ambulance, gave him an IV, checked him out, stayed with him until he felt better, then told him "No charge. Enjoy your trip to Germany." And if that wasn't enough, when they realized the group had had to move onto the train station without him, they gave him a ride over there to catch up with them.
I'm so ground down by the predatory realities of America in general in 2025 that this just about blew my fucking mind.
GREAT NEWS! The Covid Safety Handbook audiobook is now accessible online for public library patrons across North America!

This beautiful piece of street art on the Broomielaw underneath the Central Station viaduct in Glasgow is one of the street swallows created by artist Wilma van der Meyden. It's made from fragments of ceramics collected from the shores of the Firth of Clyde.
as Robert Reich notes (confirming some earlier posts) there is an obscure part of Trump's budget bill that would stop US courts enforcing the constitution when the administration violates its constraints (effectively removing all checks from Trump's rule)....
I wonder what @davidallengreen thanks of this, as on Reich's interpretation it looks like a major step towards dictatorship in the US?

At last @w3c member meeting, Sandrine Elmi Hersi of @arcep outlined EU 🇪🇺 and French 🇫🇷 efforts to reduce the environmental impact of digital technologies.
To help promote eco-design and global cooperation, Arcep published a 2024 framework with 78 best practices to make digital services, devices, networks, and #AI together more sustainable.

BREAKING: Louisiana just opened the floodgates to algorithmic voter suppression.
They’re using “DOGE” (likely Elon’s synthetic AI tool, not the meme coin) to “clean” voter rolls. Translation? Purge poor, young, and minority voters using AI trained on #MAGA-coded data.
This isn’t innovation—it’s installation. And here’s what it leads to:
•Biased Purges: If #DOGE uses engagement, location, or digital history to “verify” voters, it will disproportionately flag marginalized groups as “suspicious.”
Things paramedics (~$20/hr base pay) and EMTs (~$17/hr base) I work with have done for people this year:
1. Paid for prescriptions so the patient wouldn’t have to call 911 every few days (multiple patients and crews).
2. Paid for rideshares to get people places when they didn’t want an ambulance but needed help.
3. Bought and delivered meals to a patient.
4. Bought clothing for a patient and delivered it to the hospital for them.
And many more I can’t recall right now.

An absolute GENIUS has put googly eyes on the huge white tube outside of the Pompidou center in Paris. And I am all for it.
This is your weird picture of Paris for today.
For the 10th and final time, I dropped off my bike to ship to San Francisco to ride 545 miles to Los Angeles with AIDSLifeCycle.
Thank you, ACE Bike Shipping.

I've been away from Mastodon for a bit, just really having a hard time as a fed employee and scientist trying to hang on to whatever we have left. For anyone who needs something peaceful right now, here's a sunset on the wilderness coast of Washington.
