I’m a staunch supporter of #encryption, except when it comes to law enforcement transparency. Live in #Oakland? Sign this (be sure to update all fields, it defaulted me to San Jose and had to be changed)…

Finally caught #FreakyTales at the Grand Lake Theater last night and really enjoyed it. It’s the most #Oakland movie I’ve ever seen — smart, funny, a bit kitschy, and cartoonishly violent (which I’m fine with, especially when it involves nazi shitbags getting their assed kicked). The cast is a nice mix of star power (Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Dominique Thorne), local heroes, and up and comers, and the locations are places I’m at regularly (the Grand Lake Theater is prominently featured, as is the Giant 1/4 Pound Burger a couple blocks from my house). Highly recommended, and if you’re in the Bay you should try to catch it at the Grand Lake Theater.
Adam Levitin on the GENIUS Act: “[I]n regard to cash deposits, the stablecoin investors will have priority over the claims of ma-and-pa for their bank deposits (and thus over the FDIC's subrogation claim when it pays ma-and-pa). Yes, you read that correctly: Congress is about to put the claims of stablecoin investors ahead of ma and pa's bank deposits. That's just stunning. Now ma-and-pa's deposits are FDIC insured, so they'll be alright, but it means the FDIC's Deposit Insurance Fund is footing the bill. In other words, the GENIUS Act is subsidizing stablecoin issuance on the back of bank deposits. By subordinating the FDIC's subrogation claim in a bank insolvency to the claims of stablecoin investors, the GENIUS Act is effectively letting FDIC insurance leak out to cover uninsured stablecoins, without any insurance premiums paid.”

My daughter, aged 12:
“If I had the power to turn invisible, I’d go to France and beat up a mime. It wouldn’t do anything for me, but his audience would think he was the most amazing mime ever.”
Tried a new spot on Lakeshore in #Oakland today, Crazy Block Cheesecakes, the storefront says BBQ⭐️LATKES, and we’ve been highly anticipating the opening. Both the brisket and latkes were amazing, the baked beans super smoky and porky. We grabbed a small Henny Praline cheesecake too. Holy shit. This is *the most* Oakland place to hit Lakeshore in years. So yeah. We’ll be back. #HennythingIsPossible
#NowPlaying Les McCann, Invitation to Openness (Atlantic, 1972). I bought this record when I was in college on the recommendation of the local record store clerk. The vinyl itself was pristine but the cover was a bit jacked up so the price was right. A fast favorite, the deeply soulful, slightly psychedelic approach to jazz has become the standard by which I judge all early fusion. McCann’s group on this one is absolutely top notch (Yusef Lateef, Cornell Dupree, Bill Salter just name a few), and the production is fantastic. It’s just *one of those* records for me.
SFJazz also just got some federal funding pulled, so if you enjoy music like this, consider helping out: https://www.sfjazz.org/joingive/overview/
#NowPlaying The Beatnuts, Intoxicated Demons, The EP (Violator/Relativity, 1993). A perfect way to wrap up a long week, unwinding with early ‘90s boom-bap from these East Coast hip-hop vets. “We got more beats than Puerto Ricans got cousins.”
