Highly recommend reading this story about a reporter casually finding out his wife is a world Tetris champion: archive.boston.com/news/globe/

"It's funny," I told Flewin. "We have an old Nintendo Game Boy floating around the house, and Tetris is the only game we own. My wife will sometimes dig it out to play on airplanes and long car rides. She's weirdly good at it. She can get 500 or 600 lines, no problem."

What Flewin said next I will never forget.

"Oh, my!"

@amapanda This is our world now. The world of coordinates and layers; the beauty of scale and symbol. We exist without nationality, skin color, or religious bias. You draw borders, wage wars, erase places, rename truths, and try to make us believe it is for our own good, yet we are the criminals. Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. I am a mapper, and this is my manifesto.

@cmdrmoto Thanks, I edited the post now. Third time this week something on Reddit turns out to be fake. One was a fake photo I saved and lucky rechecked the next day before posting. Another a great revenge story but in comments people pointed out the user's posting history was all over: different gender, different ages, kids/no kids. Trust no one (on Reddit) /s

Have you ever thought to yourself: "It sure would be nice to see the geometry for baseball fields of Nebraska" or "raceways of Germany"... wow, me too! That's fun.

X-of-Y may be the perfect thing. You give it an overpass query and it does it's best to show you everything neatly side by side.

Here's every jetsprint boat lake in the world (on OSM!).

A grid of cards containing unusually shaped "lakes". Each drawn in a light blue. They have the appearance of very squiggly pasta. Each card has a link to OSM as well as some of the tags (ex:name)

I've been on holiday in a German-speaking country, using my private laptop, always declining cookies, do not track,...
(using Firefox)

Today, using my work laptop I've already had 2 websites give me messages in German.

All those banners and consent things are just window dressing

My 🇩🇪 🚅 diagram has been updated for 2026! It focuses on long-distance train lines that run at least three times a day. Providing a more interpretable alternative to 's official and diagram with a stronger focus on the system (regularly running connections and their frequency instead of the sole line definition) was my initial motivation for starting creating diagrams a couple of years ago.
My diagram: larstransportmaps.com/2026/01/
Official: cms.static-bahn.de/wmedia/reda
(edit: image)

Unofficial transport diagram of Germany. It shows the long-distance lines in an octolinear structure. Lines running on the same axes are coloured the same.

User Trowaway_whistleblow on reddit "I’m a developer for a major food delivery app." "We actually ran an A/B test last year where we didn't speed up the priority orders, we just purposefully delayed non-priority orders by 5 to 10 minutes to make the Priority ones "feel" faster by comparison. Management loved the results. We generated millions in pure profit just by making the standard service worse, not by making the premium service better." reddit.com/r/confession/commen

Them: machine translation is essentially solved

Me: Happy new what now?!

Phone Screen cap of a bluesky post pointing out that “Feliz ano nuevo” means “happy new anus”. Below is the machine translation of the same phrase which says “happy new year”.

Believe it or not, I haven't seen enough maps to do a "best of" list for 2025. Here are some mappy highlights of the year (part 1 of 2) featuring content from @pinakographos and @milhaud mapoftheweek.substack.com/p/ov

Micro-mapping one property. There's a playground=trampoline, playground=playhouse, leisure=swimming_pool, leisure=garden and footway=sidewalk. (private) pool can be useful in case of wildfires (source of water) I guess. Zooming out though 300 houses nearby are still missing on the map.

I never knew it was called the “Moylan arrow.” But now that I know, I will call it that. It’s such a super simple, yet super valuable innovation.

Got new kitchen knife for Christmas, on first use made a "and now I'll cut these vegetables with my new knife" photo, then a minute later cut some skin off my index finger. Finally use for the first-aid kit I got for Christmas last year. (All good, I laughed)
