I just made these beds 2 months ago. The plants have been in a few weeks now. I filled some of the beds with spent mushroom compost with some added horse manure. Others are filled with pure compomst from the garden centre. I lost a whole pak choi last week. Don't know what happened. The compost is already full of life anyway. We'll see what happens.

Looks great! How do you know the white variety is ripe?

No, first time. I've seen these collars lasting for 12 years, but they are on a plstic base. I suspect that I'll have to replace them after 5 years or so. They cost me 10 euros per collar. There will be 14 collars in total. That's 28 euros per year. Not bad, I guess. 😊

Renoved the tarp that covered the weed on our plot for 6 weeks. Got the tiles out and levelled everything as smoothly as possible. We will create more raised beds this weekend.

Put some plants in the raised beds! Finally, after our 3 week holiday, I had time to do it. Potatoes, various brassicas, fennel, cherry tomatoes. And as you can see, I put in some ollas.

As a Dutchman, I can tell you it is quite common. Some local councils subsidise these little 'geveltuinen', as we call them, by building the small border along the wall of the house, providing compost and sometimes even some plants.

I ate the strangest thing today. Fiddleheads. It's the fronds of Ostrich ferns. Had to cook it twice to get rid of the brown bits. Then sauteed it with some shallots and cream. Topped it off with pistachio nuts. It was delicious! I will probably grow them on the allotment next year.

Nice specimen in the Arboretum of Davis, California. I think it's monocarpic, so the plant will die soon after flowering...

Was gifted 20 wheelbarrows of compost from a nearby allotment. Some plastic was found in it, but honestly, it doesn’t seem any worse than the stuff you get in bags from the garden centre.

I know the Dalek type compost bin works very well, but I think it's not that beautiful... So, I ordered a wooden alternative. It took quite a while to put together, but I'm very pleased with the result. 😃💚

I started raised beds with the 'no dig' method. So happy to have my own allotment! The neighbours are very nice.
