A windfall enabled me to realise my dream of moving to the countryside. I purchased a modest stone dwelling and fitted it out with upcycled furniture and a distressed slate floor. The locals mocked me for my urban affectations, for not knowing the difference between a turnip and a swede and for my soft, pudgy hands which indicated I'd never done an honest day's work in my life. I told them they underestimated the demands of white collar roles. I sat in airless meeting rooms and drank instant coffee. I ate sandwiches with unidentifiable fillings and suffered terrible migraines. Messages arrived day and night, most of which were entirely inconsequential, despite being flagged as urgent.
