Privacy issues at the heart of ChatGPT are catching up with OpenAI. Since Italy announced a temporary ban on ChatGPT last week, regulators in Ireland, Germany, and France have asked Italy from more information. Canada has opened its own investigation.
At the center of the problems—aside from some smaller issues—is how training data scraped from the internet includes people’s personal information.
In Europe, unlike the US where OpenAI is based, personal data on the open web is still protected by data protection laws. And it seems like OpenAI’s legal justification from scooping everything up isn’t good enough.
But this is also a wider problem. It cuts to the core of all machine learning systems. Training data can’t just be scooped up from the open web, existing ML datasets likely don’t have data protection considerations, and ongoing uses of ML may all be subject to the issues
