A person on a bicycle is by far the most energy-efficient among animals and machines per distance traveled relative to body weight. The bicycle is magic.

A graph titled "Cost of Transport" showing the relationship between body weight (in kilograms) and energy consumption for distance traveled (calories per gram per kilometer) for various animals and machines. It highlights that a person on a bicycle ranks first in efficiency.

And I’m glad to have contributed with my own two minutes. In these, I am summarizing a recent blogpost of mine on the role of #parliaments in setting #TradePolicy, see thread here: mstdn.social/@oliver_braunschw

🎧A podcast episode with a broad set of ideas for how to make #trade more #inclusive. Very much worth listening to. The points raised cover the #WTO; national policies for #women, #LGBTQ, or #indigenous communities; the role of #parliaments; making #TradeFinance #accessible; or the role of #digital trade, to name just a few.

What do you think, should parliaments have a bigger role in negotiating #TradeAgreements, what are important principles for negotiators, #parliaments, and the executive to secure public support for #trade and global #cooperation?

Parliamentary involvement can both strengthen domestic support for #trade and for #InternationalCooperation. This is becoming even more critical as global #TradeCooperation is shifting and geopolitical considerations are moving up policy agendas.

Key principles for parliaments’ involvement in trade policy. They should:
• build capacity
• define goals of #TradePolicy
• accompany #negotiations
• ratify #agreements & oversee their #implementation.

These are crucial to better align trade with the public interest. 🧵2/3

Trade #policy often sidesteps parliamentary scrutiny. My new analysis examines how strengthening the role of #parliaments can advance more balanced and sustainable #trade. I identified four key principles for this. 🧵 /3

From opportunities in #sustainable #SupplyChains to controversial topics on intellectual property rights (#IPRs) - the recently signed #trade agreement between #India and the #EFTA states has it. In my newest blog post, I am calling on national #parliaments to approve the agreement, explore synergies for #sustainability, and remain vigilant about controversial issues.

A call to strengthening the #resilience of global #food system. The authors propose #StressTesting. Extreme weather events associated with #ClimateChange are happening more often and are having bigger impacts. This is already leading to higher #food prices and reduces the ability of governments to secure food #SupplyChains. The authors state that last year, the US alone had 28 such events with an associated cost of $1 billion.

on local content requirements for an affordable, secure, and clean #energy future:

1️⃣ Avert future local content requirements, phase out existing ones.
2️⃣ Ensure #policy certainty.
3️⃣ Retain policy space where there is evidence that this kind of policy can play a positive role.

❓ In which areas do you see the most potential to strengthen the #GlobalValueChains that underpin the #EnergyTransition? (2/2)

2024-03-15

📑 My newest blog post focuses on so-called "#LocalContent requirements". It is one of the areas where #trade cooperation between countries is important and can support a better #policy balance.

💡 The background is that the number of local content requirements globally has risen starkly in recent years (see graph).

📢 And this is how #TradeAgreements can help strike a balance... (1/2) #econtwitter

Since 2008, the Global Use of LCRs has Increased Every Single Year. The blue bars represent the number of new or strengthened LCRs, the red bars reflect the number of policies reducing or removing them in each calendar year. The grey bars show the net increase in LCRs since 2008, separated into the lighter grey representing the net increase in LCRs in government procurement and the darker grey representing the net increase in all other LCRs. The number of existing LCRs from before 2008 is not captured in this graph, so the total number is likely higher. Graph & calculations by author. Original data: Global Trade Alert.
