NASA is about to launch a mission to the most metal asteroid we know. How metal? It may have once had volcanoes of molten iron.

*THAT* metal.

This is a huge benefit of working from home and it needs to be trumpeted from the rooftops. Any company that forces workers back with one side of their face and claims to be caring about the environment out of another should be called out.

Guardian article.

People who work from home all the time ‘cut emissions by 54%’ against those in office
Study in US shows one day a week of remote working cuts emissions by just 2% but two or four days lowers them by up to 29%

Think about a pedestrian/cyclist being hit by a car: the person with the lowest carbon footprint, space use, noise and pollution production hit by a high carbon, space-guzzling, noisy and polluting box of metal.

Roads are for **people**, not for cars - cars have their uses, but that does not imply that the whole system should be built to satisfy their merest whim.

So well done Wales for making 20mph the default speed limit in residential/built-up areas.

For no reason in particular I made this highly accurate Venn diagram during a college meeting today

xkcd.com/773/

A Venn diagram with two non-overlapping circles: one says "people who design university websites", the second says "people who have seen the xkcd cartoon about university websites"

I have had a wonderful weekend talking Neuroscience and functional MRS. It has been amazing to see the insights these amazing people are producing with their ground breaking research. Really looking forward to this community growing and growing.

✨ Solo by Pixelfed

We've been secretly building a single user federated photo sharing server (based on Pixelfed), with minimal setup, and built-in import

Solo is simple, download the code, drag your photos to the media directory and open your browser

So simple, yet super smart, Solo won't get in your way, but it will impress

Yep, I did a lot today, but not a lot got done.

Today is turning into one of those days when you do a lot, but very little actually gets done.

A blue-white lightning strike extends down from low-hanging, green-grey clouds at night, appearing to strike just behind a small forested island in centre distance. The clouds break across a green-fading-to-gold sky, with a rippling lake below reflecting back the sky and the bolt of lightning.

The amazing golden color of these scarab beetles (Chrysina resplendens) is not a result of pigmentation or actual metal, but ≈70 microscropic chitin layers of decreasing thickness that reflect light to produce a metallic effect.
