If you do it right, your science will be replicable: preregistration, adequate sample sizes, transparency. is just science done right:

@1in5project In her presidential address, the head of the British
Science Association Jane Francis indicated her support for the 1in5project initiative!

This initiative is trying to help get universities toward a target of one in five final year projects or dissertations taking on climate and bio-diversity issues - across all disciplines.

If your students are still finalising topics, or you want to join, see:

"preregistration does not constitute reflexivity by itself" -- very interesting paper (link to follow). I am an advocate of preregistration as a signal of openness and transparency but I wholeheartedly agree - there is no 'objective' preregistration, and a registered and significant p-value does not "prove" that one's hypothesis is "true". It's worth emphasising over and over when teaching open science practice.

@StephenCurry haha sure the poor billionaires… I suppose you could say the aim was never to give us a glimpse of hope about the future.

@StephenCurry #spoileralert personally it really failed me at the very last scene - the woman who was deemed to be “too much” to be the CEO by all these white men, all along, finally getting tamed back in her “rightful” place, making way for her husband to lead while she is having his baby. What a puny ending, to say the least…

Building a community:

- Group work so students work with peers and learn about team science
- Support creates trust so people become more open to talking about mistakes and errors, and asking for help
- Seminar and workshop series based around methods and metascience that is open to both students and staff to present ideas and questions: psyteachr.github.io/mms/
- Students appreciate seeing staff ask questions as well

@RARohde Thank you for sharing. This feels so alarming... it's hard not to feel hopeless. What does it mean? What do we tell people to do? It reminds me of the Leventhal's classic study on fear appeal ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/

This is getting ridiculous.

OISST provides a real-time daily index of ocean surface temperature (60 S - 60 N). For the last month it has been continuously reading higher than in any previous year and still shows no sign of settling.

I think one of the power of the #chatgpt chatter is its potential to get CogSci to move outside the brain for good and start modelling what happens when humans interact with intelligent but adaptive partners to understand cognition. I’m not sure it’s augmented intelligence or rather simply that intelligence is thinking while interacting. All in all nice post by @tomstafford open.substack.com/pub/tomstaff

Today I presented a flash talk where I shared insights I learnt writing research funding applications. The most counterintuitive remains a lesson in humility which I was given about a decade ago and never forgot, it’s about meeting your funder halfway.

@jbigham @simulo I think the “look” is more important than we might think at first. I have often wondered whether/to what extent the perceived scientific value of an academic paper would change as a function of its formatting. The technology for saving a document as an ebook is here. Some journals also offer epub. The question is not so much whether technological solutions exist. Rather it is why academic users haven’t adopted them, whether they are sharing a preprint or downloading an article…
