@Moisturizor I've gone down a new rabbit hole, haha. I am watching another one of his videos about repurposing a 5GHz antenna. youtube.com/watch?v=7kBEoL3x_Fs

@Moisturizor That was highly interesting.

Since I hear so many content creators mispronounce it, MATE (desktop environment) is pronounced "Mah-Tay" and it is named after yerba matΓ©, the South American plant. Learn more at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MATE_(de

I have been working on a personal webpage to be hosted on GitLab and I am learning to "code" through the terminal. I am still using nano (I don't see that changing anytime soon), but I installed Terminator and switched my bash shell to fish, which has really helped with the work-flow.

@vkc Great video! I looked at your page and it looks awesome! I recently got inspired to make a personal site (still in progress, not shared it yet) and all of that HTML knowledge I had from the late 90's starting rushing back. My goal is to write it all myself, maybe annoying my wife to do some graphic design. I did learn to do a little java script and css in the past few days, but I am keeping it all super simple.

I think mastodon.social is having more server issues today. I keep getting 503 errors popping up and its running very slow.

2025-06-17

@Linux I understand your perspective. My issue is IBM's still a large, old-school corporation. Hard to trust them after they ditched CentOS (free RHEL rebuild) for CentOS Stream (upstream dev) right after the acquisition. I don't believe we should rely on big tech. I prefer community-built tools & supporting them when I can.

@Linux I tried Fedora upon your recommendation (I greatly appreciate it) and enjoyed my time with it. I ended up going back to Debian because I missed the familiarity. My main reservation with Fedora was their close relationship with Red Hat, and ultimately their overlord, IBM.

@dankrolla Usually when a company calls software a service (SaaS), they start asking for monthly payments, i.e. Microsoft 365 or Adobe Creative Cloud. I'm sure that is their wet dream.

2025-06-16

@tasinone Yeah, maybe, but I run into the same issues on any distro I've tried. The problem isn't Linux or a distro, it is the NVIDIA proprietary drivers are the worst. I can now fix the issues, I'm especially good at it in Debian. I'm just whining because Intel and AMD drivers aren't like this.

Occurences of swearing in the Linux kernel source code over time

You know, I haven't been on Linux or Debian for a long time. With all of the problems I have had with NVIDIA drivers and getting the latest games to work on Debian and other distros and fighting the drivers to cooperate, I feel like I'm an expert at this point. I have really grown to dislike NVIDIA.

@kero And I'm sure you're probably already familiar with it, but be sure to check http://localhost:631 to access CUPS for printer configuration and troubleshooting.

2025-06-16

@kero One final idea, you could try the Linux label printer driver for Xprinter at xprintertech.com/drivers-2.html I'm not sure if it comes in a .deb or .rpm package, so that would probably involve converting it to an Arch package or extracting the PPD file.

2025-06-16

@kero You could (though less likely to work) also try some common open-source printer driver collections such as gutenprint or foo2zjs to see if they might work, as well.

2025-06-16

@kero I imagine that is frustrating. You're probably not going to find drivers for it for Linux. I was hoping to find a user-made package in the AUR, but that didn't turn up for anything, either aur.archlinux.org Linux relies on CUPS and you're probably going to have to try a driver for something similar, such as "Zebra 2844" or "Generic Thermal Label Printer" in Majaro's desktop "Print Settings."
