As a non-native English speaker from a not-so-popular language group, learning to read even casual science stuff was an uphill battle. First I had to learn English to a reasonable level. Then I realized that English-Romanian dictionaries hadn’t really kept up with science.
I eventually managed to get my hands on a fancy English-only dictionary (yes, a printed one, this was a while ago), but then I ran into another problem: I'd start from one definition, only to find another unfamiliar word in the explanation, then another one in that definition and so on, until I forgot where I had started. And even when I did understand a concept, I'd often be stuck with the English word and with a lot of frustration about trying to convey that in my own language.
Some of those struggles are outdated now. At least you no longer have to deal with a giant dictionary pressing into your ribs if you’re reading lying down. But the language gap in science communication still exists.
That’s why I’m launching a community project: The brain across languages.
We’re inviting students who speak more than one language to help us translate Neurofrontiers content into as many languages as possible.
If you’re interested (or know someone who might be), details here: https://neurofrontiers.blog/the-brain-across-languages/
Boosts are very much appreciated!

URGENT: Accessibility for disabled people is about to be removed from federal buildings —unless we act by MONDAY.
Taking action will require only three minutes of your time.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a "direct final rule" that would eliminate the long-standing requirement that new buildings constructed with federal funds must be accessible to people with disabilities.
They claim it’s “unnecessary” and “burdensome.” But here’s what eliminating this rule really means:
New federally funded buildings could be built without ramps, elevators, accessible bathrooms, or doors.
There would be no enforceable standards for accessibility in construction or major renovations.
It weakens the civil rights protections guaranteed by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
This rule will take effect July 15 unless the public pushes back. We have until Monday, June 16 to submit comments.
👉 Take a minute now and submit comments.
📧 You can Email your comments to: DOEGeneralCounsel@hq.doe.gov
Your email comment doesn’t need to be long. Just say why you oppose removing accessibility protections and why they matter to you or your community.
And/or you can use these forms from the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (which I suspect will also get you on their mailing list):
➡️ Public comment #1 https://nacdd.quorum.us/campaign/128333/
➡️ Public Comment #2 https://nacdd.quorum.us/campaign/128336/
Please speak up—and share this widely. We cannot let accessibility be rolled back without a fight.
Thank you.
PLEASE BOOST: Icelandair broke two wheels off my new suitcase. I'm stuck in KEF airport in Iceland. Is the reach of Mastodon powerful enough that it can find someone nearby who can help me get a new suitcase that has dimensions that can be checked on Austrian Air? I think that's 158 cm linear.
Are there any fans of my art out there who are Scientists or SciComm folks? Would you like me to attempt an abstract representation of your specialty with art, in one of my daily drawings?
Why would I do this? We all need a little joy in these times, and the inspiration may help me get unstuck from my comfort patterns.
My background is mostly in Molecular Biology and Biochem, but I love learning about new fields.
This is the second painting in a new collection, Feline Flows and Poses. It's "Loaf"!
Please boost and donate if you can.
19 days left to raise the funds for this vital public newspaper archive!
Mastodonians have helped it grow by hundreds of dollars in the last couple days. Can we take it all the way to $300,000 in time?
Currently at $104,355/$300,000

On average, doctors in Ethiopia earn just $80 a month – a fraction of what their counterparts elsewhere in Africa take home. Now, doctors and healthcare workers are going on strike to demand better pay. But instead of negotiating, the government is locking them up. https://continent.substack.com/p/doctors-on-strike-ethiopian-government

A reading room
In 2024, Heinzelmann and Suryawinata created a foundation to support the microlibrary project’s growth. The goal? Expand to 100 branches by 2045.

I don't love posting about this stuff, but there was a pretty great quote in this article about an ICE raid in a small town in the Pocono mountains.
"It's really hard to fathom that the guy making my pizza for 25 years is a gangster and a terrorist, and the person who shows up in an unmarked car wearing a mask and body armor comes to take him away is somehow the good guy," said Simon.
Quick reminder that my annual anniversary sale is going on right now till tomorrow at midnight PST!
My business is now a toddler!
You don't need to use weird spellings or algospeak for any topics on the Fediverse ("unalived", "seggs" etc). There is no automated moderation or algorithm on here, moderation happens entirely through human beings and posts are shown in chronological order.
In fact it's better that you use the correct spellings for difficult topics so that people with genuine traumas related to them can filter them more easily.

250 years ago, Americans made it pretty clear that we weren’t going to be ruled by kings.
In 18 days, we’re taking to the streets again to reject Trump’s authoritarianism and show the world what democracy really looks like. We hope to see you on June 14 for No Kings Day: https://www.nokings.org/?SQF_SOURCE=indivisible
Waking up to reports that overnight Israeli strikes killed at least 52 people in the Gaza Strip on Monday, including 36 in a school-turned-shelter that was struck as people slept, setting their belongings ablaze.
The Israeli military murdered dozens of Palestinian children while they slept. And they’re still blocking aid. All this after unilaterally breaking the ceasefire deal they agreed to.
This is intentional genocide & the world must act. Horrific horrific horrific.
Added a lot of details, to loose the pristine 'plasticky' feel. Ever so slightly, but enough to make a big difference. Also finished the base. Just a bit of detailing left and this one is done and ready for the person who commissioned it! (Also photography, it should be documented too.)
