Also this from Kelly Haynes:

“Once we overcome the isolation and alienation that make collective action feel improbable in the first place, we will be positioned to fight for each other in a multitude of ways. What’s absolutely crucial is that we build bonds of solidarity now and cultivate the skills we will need to fight together.”

“Of course, states can both secure our freedom and threaten it; there is no way to permanently escape this dilemma. But the conscious cultivation of solidarity would make people feel more connected to each other and more invested in and protective of the social programs and democratic structures on which everyone’s lives depend.”

This whole thing.

Giving a keynote this week at Freie Universität #Berlin on feminist methods for studying #socialmedia mobilization. Reflecting on all the things that have changed since we published #hashtagactivism in 2020. Looking forward to learning for the other presenters!

exactly @glassdelusion and thx for asking @mkristensson I find the context collapse more intense on FB Those of us of a certain age have “friends” there going back 20 yrs and family members tend to be there. One post may get comments from your work colleagues, someone you used to get high with in grad school, that girl who bullied you in high school who is now into MLM, and your uncle who always says something embarrassing. Navigating that can be stressful!

@alex inescapable I suppose, but womp womp.

Went back to play on #facebook again because I’m in a #socialmedia exploration and retesting phase. Instantly remember why I hate it there. And it’s not because meta sucks (it does) it’s because the context collapse there is just wilder and weirder than anywhere else.

2024-06-25

@josh thank you for teaching it!!

2024-06-25

@alice cool I’ll play! Not STEM but adjacent. PhD in mass communication and I was trained in African American studies, media studies, and social movement studies. My work focuses on how marginalized groups create and levy media & tech for social change. I wrote a book about the Black press and celebrity protest, another on #HashtagActivism by #feminist and racial justice networks, and am now writing a cultural history of Black mediamakers

@josh @communicationscholars @akaun this book really is excellent. I recently used it for a project and my colleague in the office next door was reading it at the same time! 🤓

Anne Kaun (@akaun) and Fredrik Stiernstedt have won the International Communication Association's 2024 Outstanding Book Award for "Prison Media," which examines prisons as media environments and as sites where communication technologies — especially those that facilitate user surveillance — are pioneered and refined. The book is a tremendous scholarly and public contribution. 1/3

The cover image for the book. Am image of prisoners working and reading in a drab room appears over a black background.

@inquiline thanks I will check both of these out!

@alienghic @futurebird thanks for the rec!

@evedazzle thanks for this! I will try to explore that second part

@sb thanks for this note!

@ohmu @Wolven ah he and I followed each other over on Bsky, glad to see him here and thanks for the follow and encouragement :)

2024-06-25

@jdp23 thx Jon, I def have thoughts about the mod there. It seemed on the right track but obviously wasn’t considering how folks who only follow a few people but have a lot of followers might want to protect their yard so to speak. And of course the identity stuff. Oddly the open hate and threats on Twitter were easier to anticipate/ignore to me than the hostility and oneupmanship disguised as earnestness! I don’t like the UX here but I’m going to try to push through it.

@smadin thanks Scott! I set up my account here early on but couldn’t quite get it to stick, but try try again and whatnot!

Definitely need a reminder or primer on how to make this place work, please share if you have one 🙏🏽 I know yall are big on #hashtags 😉

Well hello #mastodon. I deactivated my #bluesky account b/c of reply guy sea lioning and antagonism toward Black women experts there. Very bummed about it b/c I invested a lot in growing my followers there, made some great connections, and believe it’s exponentially better than the site formally known as #Twitter. I might go back, I don’t know but the #moderation tools weren’t addressing my needs. Guess I’ll try again to learn this place 👋🏽
