Following the examples of corporations and nations on climate targets, I too commit to making curl and apache mostly bugfree by 2040.

If you also have targets in your job, this might be good for you as well.💁🏻‍♂️

Director of engineering at Canonical blogs about how their hiring process, contrary to public opinion, is very excellent, requires no changes but does seemingly need fifty thousand words justifying it. And notably does not discuss the part where Mark Shuttleworth rudely interviews you at the end.

@jnsgruk @EvilDMP

I feel sincerely sorry for the #Canonical teams that will remain permanently understaffed because some C-level decided long ago that they would only hire unicorns. It's a policy that doesn't scale well.

But you also want them to be “excellent” and “outstanding”: this is where it gets challenging, as the set resulting from this intersection gets fairly narrow with experienced candidates.

Outstanding and experienced candidates are in high demand everywhere, they are also likely to be successful as self-employed consultants, and more likely than others to (rightly) assess that this flawed hiring process is a losing game, statistically not worth spending time/energy on.

@jnsgruk @EvilDMP

It's all the fault of the candidates if they don't get through. This is of course “technically true” given a process that can't be wrong.

This process — like many others — is obviously designed to test candidates patience and willingness to go through questionable corporate practices without complaining or even showing frustration about them.

Therefore, you are primarily looking for *compliant* candidates. Good girls, good boys that performed well in high school.

You went through the trouble of writing and publishing a 4150+ words -wall of text- article (that's a 17 to 23 min read, or 7 to 11 printed pages, or close to the median length of a research paper) in which it appears that you are aware of the subpar public reputation of #Canonical hiring process, where you express some frustration about candidates that “underperform” or don't even apply, but yet there is very little (as in: no) questioning of that process.

1/4

Excerpts from the blog article, *highlighted* by me:
…
A lot has been written on social media about Canonical and our hiring processes. *Some of it is even true.*
…
Amongst all these applications we see: candidates who apply for wholly unsuitable roles; candidates who don’t apply for the job that would suit them best; *strong candidates who put in weak applications;* candidates who unwittingly undermine their own applications. And *we know there are also people, who would be excellent candidates, who decide not to apply at all.*

When this happens, it certainly hurts the candidate, but it’s bad for us too. We’d like to change *some* of those patterns – hence this article, which points out how they occur. We want candidates to avoid some pitfalls and find better success.
…
If someone decides they don’t want to discuss their education or answer our questions, for whatever reason, that is fair enough. *There are plenty of other companies offering jobs, and we have plenty of other candidates.* But, it would be a shame if an otherwise strong candidate withdrew an application on the basis of unfounded fears about the purpose of those questions.
…
Still, *one of the greatest frustrations* of my role *is a candidate* whom I suspect, or even know, is *much stronger than their performance in the hiring process suggests.*
