This winter is so broken.
We don’t even bother having a diurnal temperature cycle anymore.
The year is slowly coming to an end and everything and everyone quits work, so, ok, fine with me, we’ve had enough weather for the year.

Temperature forecast for a few days with hardly any variation

I kind of like the analogy of being able to retrain/rewire your brain like an artificial neural network but to be used with caution, or as this article quotes Tomaso Poggio (MIT): artificial neurons are just “caricatures of biological neurons”.

Spread the word to those most at risk of stroke and heart attack.
The flu increases the risk, vaccination reduces it.

Gift idea for , the magnificent Zoom book by Istvan Banyai.
It’s very old but timeless. A wordless picture book that zooms out, from the details to the big picture.
A friend‘s child called it a ‘magic book’ and it really is, for both kids and adults. It’s a great way to learn about perspective and to remember to take a step back and reconsider the importance of things.

Nice summary of the history and current state of Machine Learning/AI in weather forecasting in this @ECMWF publication on the occasion of their 50th anniversary.

Traditional weather forecast models are based on physical equations and run for hours on large supercomputers, which means, here, AI can actually SAVE energy contrary to popular belief.

But will AI be able to learn the underlying physics beyond replicating the past?
As climate change progresses, the future will increasingly look very different from the past and how well will AI cope with that?
I‘m curious and open but I think it‘s too early to come to a conclusion.

“As the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season ends, the future of forecasting is AI”

That’s a nice article but it doesn’t reflect what the title says (and it shouldn’t).

Hurricane forecasting is a special category but here as well as generally in weather forecasting, I don’t think we are at a point where we could drop one or the other. AI has important applications in meteorology for sure but I think it’s still unclear if everything can be replaced by AI.

I’ve been randomly zooming into this satellite image of a Jamaican neighborhood and it’s just devastating. No tree left standing, houses without roofs or completely destroyed.

Nature is a force bigger than us. We should not mess with it. Hoping for at 🙏.

To cite some consequences:
“Just five years after the strike, in 1980, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was elected Iceland’s first female president — and the world’s first democratically elected female head of state.”
“The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index has rated Iceland the most gender-equal country for the last 16 years.”

2025 ranking with Iceland on top, followed by Finland, Norway, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Sweden, Republic of Moldova, Namibia, Germany, and Ireland.

Wow, first time I’m hearing about the women’s general strike in Iceland 50 years ago, fighting for more equality.
Fun fact: They called it “Women’s Day Off” instead of strike to make it sound more appealing.
