FLASH FLOOD WARNING:

It's been busy in the #Northland with multiple #tornado and #severe #thunderstorm warnings.

Now the focus is shifting to #flash #flooding in the Iron Range.

#Radar estimated #rainfall totals are nearing 6 inches in spots.

A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for the Iron Range region of the Northland, which is southeastern Itasca County and central St. Louis County, until 10:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2025.

Radar estimated rainfall totals since this afternoon over the Flash Flood Warning area are ranging between 3 to 6 inches. That means there is flooding rapidly occurring in low-lying and poor drainage areas over the next several hours. Be safe if you encounter water where it shouldn't be.

A storm is born in Iroquois County, Illinois this evening.

The any fires from nothing to a red thunderstorm in a short period of time.

TORNADO WARNING:

A confirmed #tornado has been spotted with a storm moving through Cass and Crow Wing counties over the past hour.

It is still showing strong signs of #rotation on the #radar, and will enter Aitkin County by 5:30.

A Tornado Warning is in effect for far west central Aitkin County until 5:30 p.m. A thunderstorm with a confirmed tornado is moving to the east at 40 mph. It is expected to reach Crosby by 5:12 p.m., Rabbit Lake by 5:18 p.m., Aitkin by 5:30 p.m. and Spencer at 5:36 p.m.

4 P.M. RADAR UPDATE:

Watching the #radar to the west of the #Northland, as more #thunderstorms develop along a cold front.

This is the line that will be responsible for any strong or #severe #weather we see the rest of Monday.

Greatest threats remain large #hail, high #winds, and possible #tornadoes.

The view of the radar over the western half of the Northland at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 16, 2025, shows a line of showers and thunderstorms extending from Koochiching County south through Itasca, Cass, and Crow Wing counties and farther south through central Minnesota. It is this line that will see the development of strong and severe thunderstorms, which will push east through the Northland the rest of Monday.

Over the past century, tonnes of good books and papers have been published on E&M in general and radio and radar (and sonar) in particular. Here are three #radar textbooks for three levels of interest in the subject:

• "Introduction to Airborne Radar", Stimson—for non-#EEs without E&M background
• "Principles of Modern Radar" Vol 1 & 2, Richards, et al.—for EE students
• "Design and Analysis of Modern Tracking Systems", Blackman—for EEs

Amongst the few radar books with which I am familiar (I am not a radar expert), the most balanced presentation is found in the two-volume set by Richards, et al. Stimson's is too shallow and Blackman's too deep. (I have not read Skolnik's books.)

And my favourite EE undergrad intro textbook on E&M is this classic:

• "Engineering Electromagnetics", Hayt—one of the most accessible texts on the subject for EE students
