#PennedPossibilities 661 β€” How does your antagonist / villain handle criticism?

Not well. You can expect tantrums (and murder). People usually know better than to outwardly and openly criticize Dr. Deathβ€”unless they have a death wish, that is. No pun intended.

@QuasiTemporal @crcollins @NaraMoore Oh yes, you can combine stories that fit under one umbrella into a series, that's really, really handy. Or you can even start collections where writers can contribute to one overarching topic. It is really good!

Apropos nothing and <waves hands> everything:

Trans rights are human rights.

Trans women are women.

Trans men are men.

They throw their hate on my friends and family because they think that I, a comparatively wealthy (by international standards, meaning I own a house and a car), elderly, cis-het (ish), white, American male will not care, cuz it does not affect me personally.

They are mistaken.

Trans rights are human rights.

4. Describe something unusual/interesting about one of your characters’ looks or style.

The people in my world dress practical but also (to us) a bit conservative, women like to wear dresses. They don't ride sidesaddle though, and wear split skirts. I was surprised as to how many variations of these skirts are available, and they also look good. Here's one image that would come close to what I see my MC Bella wearing.

#WordWeavers #GL525

An illustration that shows a split skirt in three views. The skirt is in blue with a row of buttons on both legs in front. The middle view shows a front fabric panel that transforms the pants into a skirt, and shows it partly unbuttoned, the third image shows the panel attached, it now looks like an elegant skirt. The pattern is from the 1890s and made for cycling.

@youseeatortoise Great question. I had to think about it. I know Scott Lynch who writes the Gentleman Bastards series is open about his struggles with depression and there are some scenes featuring depressive episodes. I'll have to think more on it, I have a very bad memory for these things.

I think most tropes can be used to good effect but I dislike a lot of multiple personality tropes and the just pull yourself up by the bootstraps trope

Congratulations, @willelm , on the release of Shadow of the Elders.

You've already mentioned today that the sequel is something you've already thought about.

I needed a good lie down for about three months after the release of TBOTB, so well done. πŸ™‚

So, my questions are...

How far are you planning ahead?

Are there to be multiple (more than two) books?

Is it a story that will span generations?

...or in the spirit of May the Fourth Be With You, can you see your work expanding out into a variety of different stories within the universe you've created?

What's something about your book that you're especially proud of or excited for people to experience?

Other than that you published it - which is super something to be proud of! But I thought you might enjoy gushing about a character or story element or something 😘

Congratulations on publishing!

Please share what you can about Nouv’eau, about its culture, level of advancement, people, but most of all its role in the story…

@RaymondPierreL3 Thank you and so true!

It is nearly as if I can see how my brain works when I write things out like this. Specifically, I can see where it didn't want to go / wasn't bothered to look at. It was the only way for me to see that one of my characters lacked a true motivation and I think now that I know that I can work on it. I also see where other things don't align or need to be moved to an earlier stage or even scraped.

But I need the relative chaos of indexing cards so I can shove them around so I see what I haven't seen before.

These are old business cards, BTW, that wouldn't serve any other purpose, otherwise.

@strangeseawolf
There is something organic, visceral about hand written notes that cannot be replicated by a piece of software no matter how ingenious the coding and friendly the user interface.

Granted, the pen and paper annottions of thoughts extracted from a feverish imagination is not easily managed, categorised, indexed, and likely to lie dormant for ages, even forgotten about after but a short time.

But for me, there is no hesitation. When it comes to an idea that must be recorded lest it vanishes there is nothing like a piece of paper and some tool to write with.

I love you notes.

notes

In the early days of Kovenlore Chronicles (2016), my few hand written notes were rife with spoilers. In fact, it wasn’t until the later books that I started taking many notes by hand.

So, I’ll share the I wrote at the university when researching Ontyre’s moon in 2019. I made an appointment with a professor & we met in a meeting room with a white board where I tossed out questions & he brainstormed.

It was so exciting!

@willelm Sounds relatable, so, yeah, definitely a writer thing. After in the first book having myself confined to a single POV it is great to tailor a story with multiple POV, let them meet and bounce off each other. I ended up with 3 new ones accompanying the old, already established one, and I really like it.
Only my brain went a bit haywire so this Sunday is dedicated to go back to square 1 and looking exactly at motivations and goals to make it a more stringent story.πŸ˜…

@willelm Ha, amazing! I like the sound of that!
I am saying amazing because I kinda came to the same point. One SC that just lent herself to the next MC and another one that is so interesting that it seemed like a crime not to look where she would go if I let her inside my head (or the other way round). I think it is a good sign that you have created characters that are capable to carry the story on to a new book.
Good luck with the sequel! 🀞

2. Yes, so much so that two of the SCs are given more MC roles in the sequel πŸ˜†. There's a warrior who is the eternal optimist around a lot of cynics. He was very fun to write and play the other characters off him.

And then I have a very complicated character who I can't talk about because it would be a big spoiler. But he has lots of layers and his story became one that was so interesting I had to flesh out more.

@willelm That makes a lot of sense, yes. I think in a way these were always the options, although today we have a better understanding and more advanced tools, at the very core it is a constant in humanity. Thank you!
