Alexios usually has cartridges for his weapons, some creds (currency), keys, his communication device, and his tools: a lockpicking mechanism, small knife, etc. He's easy that way. There isn't much to carry around.

Truly one of the _hokiest_ parts of fantasy #worldbuilding is fake-ass names for the days of the week that are close enough to OUR days of the week that they're easy to remember.

I had believed, for a long time, that I would simply skip this with #Hammondal and use the regular names without comment or explanation.

But they "hokey bug" has poked me.

I may turn myself around on this, but first, I must engage with this hokey pokey, and put my best foot forward.

For the first time in weeks, I can breathe freely. Despite the air’s height-thinness, it is finally cool, dry, and clean. I have grown used to Son’s and the tree-paths relative freshness, compared to the deep forest’s lightless floor, Yet this is far better.

The air stayed mostly warm, even with going until the mountains, and for almost half of today’s climb. Then we reached the cloud-deck, wherein we came through thick and dark mist. Swiftly it cooled while droplets gathered on our skin. When the cover lightened, the warmth dropped even more. Back at the inn, Lady Vaeol had doled cloaks to everyone making the climb. I could tell some warriors were confused by the thick cloth. They learned its use quickly.

Lady Vaeol names this path the Ten Thousand Steps, and while I didn’t count, I understand why. We climbed the steep stairway so hard that we barely needed the cloaks, and my legs were aching and trembling before the end. When we pierced the clouds and hit sunlight, however, nothing could stop me. To see blue sky and raw sunshine caught me between laughter and tears.

The Sun indeed seems bigger and brighter here, though not greatly so. I just wanted to soak up as much light as possible. Our entry into sunlight also struck the Lashunta, as I reckon sensible for a people who spend most of their lives under clouds. They all blinked against the brightness and shielded their eyes. Many made weird gestures and uttered something that would not surprise me if it was a prayer

Zayn überlegte, ob er dass, was ihm gerade durch den Kopf
ging, wirklich sagen wollte. Er entschied sich dagegen, klappte
den Mund wieder zu und sah zu Hakim hinüber. »Wie hast du
das geschafft? Sieht man dir gar nicht an.«
»Das ist eine lange Geschichte«, wich Hakim aus.
»Erzählst du sie mir bei Gelegenheit?«
Kaija kam die Leiter herauf und zum Tisch. »Guten Morgen.«
»Wieso darf der meine Schwester schlagen?«, fragte Zayn mit
eher gespielter Entrüstung. »Und wieso schafft er das, ohne jetzt
den Kopf unter dem Arm zu tragen?«
»Das ist eine lange …«, begann Kaija.
»Habt ihr euch abgesprochen?«, blaffte Zayn dazwischen.
»Nein. Warum?«, fragte Kaija verblüfft zurück.
Kaija sah zu Hakim, dann in die Runde. Alle mussten lachen.
»Imara hat erlaubt, dass Hakim Rabea ein paar seiner Zauber-
tricks zeigt«, erklärte Kaija.
»Oh ja«, flüsterte Rabea.
»Aha.« Zayn klang ziemlich unzufrieden.
Kaija lächelte versöhnlich. »Imara, Jan, Jeremias und ich
haben gestern darüber gesprochen. Hakim hat einen besonderen
Auftrag.«
»Veilchen für Rabea«, kommentierte Zayn.

We have arrived at a small mountain settlement, which is apparently our last stop before the Hall of Stars. Earlier, Lady Vaeol showed me a gate on the village’s outskirt, through which begins a stone stairway that leads up the mountainside. Also, henceforth we shall not go on Shota-back but afoot.

Along with our climb into the mountains, the trees at this height are noticeably smaller, which means a home-tree seldom holds more than one house. This village is a whimsical motley of both tree-houses and stone buildings, hewed and stacked from quarries near at hand. More importantly, however, it has a true tavern or inn, and it serves the first ale I’ve had in all my while here, a rich braggety malt that mixes a smoky honey taste into the brew. I have enjoyed the wine I‘ve drunken here, but am grateful for something heartier.

We will climb the stairway tomorrow while half the troop stays and minds the Shotalashu.

Has anyone with relevant expertise ever thought about the question of how much possible habitable land there is in total in the Americas (including the Caribbean)? I am lucky to be alive. Today while we crossed a gulch over a tree limb, something tried to make a meal of a Shotalashu. I had already crossed while following Lady Vaeol and Remaue, when a roar broke behind. I turned and beheld another nightmare as this jungle-world loves to breed: a too-big mouth like a giant moray and buglike eyes, and overy forty feet long. It had risen from the gulch side and had leapt up, reaved both lizard and rider in its jaws, and was trying to drag them off the limb. The Shota-rider, who is named Na-yeh, had enough mind to twirl her spear to a high, choked grip and stabbed downward into the monster’s eye. That stroke likely saved her life as the giant eel-bug flinched and loosened jaws, leaving her and her Shota-steed wounded.

Quick as a wink, not only the other warriors but also the Shotalashu bewared and struck back. The huge snakelike length had enough cunning to retreat before this mounted onslaught and slipped back into the gulch, where it faded within the gloom. The Shota, however, stayed on guard, rasping threatfully, while riders all gripped their weapons, and even Remaue and the other squire had drawn bows.

Even so, how the monster next moved so swiftly I don’t know. Something shot upward behind us, where it clutched and wrapped its length around the nearest tree-trunk. While we scrambled to get the Shota’s heads around, it struck at Lady Vaeol, but got a mouthful of her damask-steel cuirass...

We stay tonight under a tree-village set within a dale, which reckoning by the roadway running through, sees fair traffic. The headwife greeted Lady Vaeol with respectful ease, which makes me wonder how often they see military patrols. Her Korasha servant brought a bowl of creamy, honey-tea that we shared, in what I deem a hospitable gesture.

Which has gotten me thinking again of what I know of these Lashunta. Until we reached the city, I had assumed these people barbarians: heavily armed raiders overlording a savage serfdom. Yet I watched a group of these tree-dwelling peasants practicing archery with the same weapons as the cityfolk have. The more I learn, the more I think I was wrong. After all, how would an outsider look on Taldane or Chelish peasants and the feudal rights their lords enjoy overhead? I have my own bitter experience with that society. Looking back, I believe my assumption of their savagery was based on their near nakedness, and not on their accomplishments.

I also saw firsthand how this treehome not only provides shelter for these folk, but also food, for it is of the milk-sap kind, and I wonder that many of the giant village-trees may be the same. The Lashunta headwife noticed my curiosity and gave me a tour, whereby I got a firsthand glimpse of their tree-houses. I found them mostly open-walled huts with overmossed thatch rooves. An open small hearth inside serves for cooking and to keep the thatch from molding...

Der Große Rheinsee

Nachdem wir nun von Ulm aus den Neckar erreicht haben, machen wir uns weiter auf den Weg zur Nordseeküste. Die nächste touristische Attraktion sind der Große und der Kleine Rheinsee. Ich nehme an, davon habt ihr noch nicht gehört. Aber wenn ihr eine topografische Karte zur Hand nehmt und vielleicht schon einmal etwas vom Oberrheingraben gehört habt, dann kann man sich vorstellen, was gemeint ist. Die Idee dahinter ist, ein so gut wie entvölkertes Europa mit „wenig“ Aufwand vor gefährlichen Hinterlassenschaften zu schützen. Eine Möglichkeit ist es, entsprechend gefährliche Gebiete unter Wasser zu setzen. Und aus dem Wasser bestimmte Rohstoffe wieder zu gewinnen. Alles andere als elegant, und Greenpeace hätte da auch protestiert. Letzlich ist es eine Abwägung, wo man welche Kontamination in seinem Weltenbau zulassen will. Außerdem löst der Rheinsee bestimmte Probleme Wasser-Transportwege betreffend und bietet Raum für Handlung. Er kommt in der #WeltNachDemLetztenKrieg mehrmals vor als wichtiger Ort für entscheidende Begebenheiten.
