I am a software engineer enjoying the twilight of my career working from home.
My latest streaming obsession is old UK food and home shows. I follow lots of topics around board games, science, tech, and travel. And I am a serial hobby dabbler forever in search of a new pastime.
I boost far more than I post. And I delete even more drafts.

A key part of the New York City mayoral races was Ranked Choice Voting.
I'm not seeing many news articles mention this yet (correct me if I'm wrong though!).
Ranked choice let's us vote first for who we actually want.... and then put in backup votes for "good enough" candidates and allows us to compromise and find common ground.
It destroys the concepts of "lesser of two evils" and "throwing away your vote".
I hope we see Ranked Choice voting everywhere.
"Why bother writing free software if nobody's going to use it" why bother producing art or documenting the life cycle of an extinct insect or sharing anything that you find interesting or fun - if people find something I've done useful then wonderful, but even if they don't I want to be able to share it with them
Dirty tricks from Kraft
"#Boston voters recently got an anonymous text slamming #Mayor #Wu. Here’s who it came from"

PSA: Vaccination schedules on the CDC website have already started changing under RFK Jr., so Scientific American published a guide to the evidence-based vaccine recommendations in place *before* all 17 members of the advisory panel were abruptly dismissed by the new administration.
Sorry I've been mostly quiet and/or utterly random here lately, we've been moving back to Boston and had a whole bunch of related personal life stuff going on, so it's been tough to be consistently online here.
How's everyone doing? Any good wins lately? Any big pushes in the labor world?
The world sure is a lot right now, but I'm here with you all, even if I'm quiet. #Solidarity
Anyone in the Cambridge/Somerville/Medford (MAMAS) region, or elsewhere in greater Boston involved in an active "internet resiliency club"? (c.f. this post and the megathread it spawned: https://kolektiva.social/@franklinlopez/114705462714586000 and https://bowshock.nl/irc, frequently referenced).
I'm an ex-network engineer with some skills and some spare equipment, but not a ham (except on stage), and a bit flummoxed by the projects out there (Reticulum, Meshtastic, SSB, etc). I'm too old and jaded to believe that we can solve the problems of people with technology, especially fragile/bespoke tech; you solve them via community organizing. But tech can facilitate community, so I'd like to figure out how we could maintain local/regional digital comms if our current house of NICs collapses.

Lychee are the most refreshing fruit on a hot, humid summer's day, yay or nay?
If nay, must offer alternatives
Over the last 10 years, Medellín, Colombia, has undergone a stunning transformation: huge swaths of the city that were previously encased in concrete have been restored to their natural state.

Happy birthday to me. A Blue Line train went past me when I was biking earlier, and I waved (as one should), and the driver waved back 😊
My Los Angeles friends, you need to know that the LA Opera is having its costume sale this Saturday and you should. Buy stuff for yourself but also send me photos: https://laopera.org/costume-shop-sale
At Muni Diaries, I told a story about how when I first arrived in San Francisco I didn’t have any quarters for the bus. An elderly Cantonese lady insisted on paying for my fare.
That, as a teenager in Singapore, I could go to jobs, dates, band, debates, all by myself because of how good the buses are. The idea of relying on a parent to drive me.. to all of my busy teenage life seems utterly topsy turvy to me.
Buses taught me how to talk to strangers, learn to trust my gut, help people who need help, and really just know that we are all in this together.
Every time I meet someone who says buses scare them, I want to tell them how amazing they can be.
But first you have to stop Othering people who are not like you.
