The whispers in the distance bring an uneasiness that often is nothing more than the perpetual fear of the bottom falling out, when you exist at the bottom where do you go when that too falls apart, for far to many ignore the plight of poverty, for it is not a choice of person but circumstances that compound beyond relief, for when you trip and fall and find yourself disabled, your self value degrades before your eyes, then the ability to eat, clothe, bathe, and keep a roof over your head becomes a monumental task, no amount of bootstrapping yourself can life you out of the pit of despair, for if I eat this meal now, I can not eat tomorrow, if I bathe today, I cant bathe tomorrow, if I pay my rent today, I may not be able to eat and bathe tomorrow, sleep becomes a torturous cycle of nightmares and insomnia, your body declines each day without the basic nutrition to maintain, the stress rewires your brain it destroys your heart, the physical pain becomes the only constant in your existence, your pleas for help for dignity become a chant the world tunes out, for if today you get to eat, your not relived but fear when the next meal will be, to have the means to not only survive but to thrive are but a distant dream, to lift one out of the mire is to show compassion while offering dignity and a hope of what will be, I am still $3,735 short of fulling my goal to end the year, so that I can wrap up some things I really need to take care of, It would be wonderful if the global community of humans could help me raise this last little bit to finish this year with, as always your compassion and support are truly a lifeline for someone like me;

The design would need to be built for modularity and be easily customizable and interoperable so that people can swap out components as needed, trade. A small amount of energy could be generated with a camping or RV solar panel and a small battery bank (would obviously need to be built with low-fire risk batteries, maybe sodium-ion if possible) for phone charging, yes, but also for life-saving measures like a fan in the summer and possibly some heating configuration for winter. #unhoused #homelessness #helpfolkslive2025 #invention #shelter #mutualaid

I remember reading in New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson that a lot of people (because housing and shelter has become so unattainable to most people by 2140) live in portable shelters called hotellos. In fact, the concept is pretty similar, if I remember correctly. We could call them that! I think KSR would approve, maybe even feel good that an idea from his fiction is being put to use to help people IRL.

These hotellos would unquestionably be given to folks for free, and we would open source the design — no patent or any of that shit. Creative Commons on the design, and then work on sharing that far and wide with homeless shelters, churches, non-profit orgs, etc etc

I’m familiar with groups like the Mad Hatters who build in situ basic shelter for our #unhoused neighbors, and I’ve thought of doing something similar (unless you’re a cop reading this, in which case, no I haven’t) — but, what if a better solution would be something like modifying a heavy duty gardening wagon for mobile shelter?

Any kind of permanent structure, however rudimentary, will inevitably be torn down by the fascists. I also wonder if more permanent or immovable housing might be a housed person’s idea of what’s best for an unhoused person. I haven’t talked to any unhoused people about this, but I don’t think it’s a coincidence that so many people use old shopping carts.

I imagine it might not be too hard to build a foldout bed frame, essentially, and then people could use part of the inside for storage of different sorts. It could even have locks and possibly some anti-theft simple tech in place, like maybe wheel locks to prevent people from stealing them since I know theft is just one of many things unhoused folks have to contend with.

Would anyone want to collaborate with me on planning something like this, potentially help me bring it to life? I worry so much about unhoused folks, and while I realize affordable, non-market permanent housing is the real solution, that will take time, if it ever materializes. (We can and should try to do everything in our power to bring this to life as well.)
