Canary in the #AI #PC coal mine?

Not having a #backup of your end-of-semester project is on you, especially if making backups was drilled into your head at the beginning of the class.
So is not having any urgency admitting to, letting alone fixing the issue.
So yeah, a failing grade it is, and I bet this is a lesson this student won't forget for the rest of their (professional) life.
Mission accomplished, it seems.

When I read studies like this, I keep thinking, hmmmm, maybe we *should* turn consequential decision-making over to machines after all

#AI or not, any #automation system that can materially impact the real world needs emergency shutdown protocols.
Cutting power to it always works.
This isn’t that hard, people.

Nice to see some balanced reporting amongst all of the #AI #hype

As I always say, when your teams tell you it’s “just a routine #upgrade”, be extra wary.
In this case, a “routine upgrade” disabled emergency calling and contributed to two *deaths*.

It's cool (so to speak) that chip construction optimization is alive and well, but running #neuralnetworks on Von Neumann architectures isn't going to get us to the kind of power efficiency the human brain is the existence proof for

It seemed to me like the world completely lost the plot when doing #customersupport in public (using #socialmedia to boot) became a thing.
I don't even know where to start with why that's a bad idea, but #privacy and #cybersecurity reasons are as good a place as any, and nobody should be surprised if stuff like this happens.

Pretty much any company is a #software company these days, and should invest accordingly.
And much more importantly, know how to make those investments work, which isn't always the case, esp. with non-#technology companies.

"Most of us don't necessarily take the time to really figure out new #technology"
While that's not an unreasonable tradeoff in some cases, you really can't complain if that comes back to bite you though.
Like in the case of digital photos - all #storage is ephemeral.

Where are people like Warren McCulloch, Walter Pitts and Frank Rosenblatt or even Yann LeCun and Geoffrey Hinton here?

It's so refreshing to read a take on #AI/#AGI that's neither handwave-y nor hype-y

I’m sympathetic to the point the author makes here, but “daycare for young adults” is going to be a bit of a hard sell, needs rebranding to justify the current economics of it

A prescient article - in a world of mindless scrolling, #live #music will be one way for people to (re-)discover that we need genuine in-person human connection to thrive
https://www.mixonline.com/blog/craig-andertons-open-channel-getting-the-band-back-together
Research suggests that we carry around a biological version of an #LLM — that is, a mindless language processor — inside our own brains.
It’s basically a glorified parser that helps us put the pieces together — and then all the thinking and interesting stuff happens outside of its boundaries.
When even the popular business press starts to talk about #neurosymbolic #AI, you know the tide is starting to turn
I guess it takes #AI and #vibecoding to remind people of the important of specs - requirements to design to code reviews
