Tool-making primate in the (late?) Anthropocene.

I want nothing less than for all humans, in all of our diversity, to live equitably and justly on this beautiful planet.

Food, housing, and healthcare are human rights. No human being is illegal. Due process of law for all.

One last gay thought for pride month: if you’re someone who has never experienced discrimination you may not understand why we need pride and rainbows everywhere. When I see a pride flag, it tells me that I am okay to be here. I look for pride flags to know if a neighborhood is safe. I look for pride flags to know if a business will treat me with decency. It’s the bare minimum and the least effort and isn’t real activism and all the other things, but it’s something better than being openly hated

“She looks for her mom, won’t take the bottle… just tantrums.”

Ana Diaz, asylum-seeker from El Salvador, married to #US. citizen w/ legal petition. At unscheduled ICE check-in, given 30 sec to say goodbye.

“She always appeared when called. They knew where she lived.”

First Vera Rubin Observatory images!! Beautiful!! Lots of happy quotes from @megschwamb here: technologyreview.com/2025/06/2

(Cynical me kind of wishes their first image was something horribly screwed up by satellite streaks, but I'm guessing that's not what they're going for - PLENTY of time to be grumpy about satellite streaks later)

My favorite Scrub Jay. This guy shuns the peanuts in favor of suet and I’m standing right in front of it taking hummingbird photos. He waits patiently for me to move, not bossy like your average Jay. We visit every day.

A California Scrub Jay takes a keen interest in its knee, curling forward to check it out while it waits for me to move. Thin pine twigs curve through the photo.

This is a different frame from a morning last month. I originally chose one where the male and female were facing each other, but thought this one shows the difference in the colors. The male is much flashier with his iridescence but the female blends in better with the earthier tones.

A male and female wood duck are perched on a metal railing facing away from each other. The male has vibrant plumage with a green head and red eyes, while the female is more subdued in color with a grayish-brown body and distinctive markings

Calvin and Hobbes comic featuring the titular characters who comprise respectively a little boy with spikey blonde hair and a tall tiger who are stood outside staring at the starry night sky pensively. The speech bubble from Calvin reads, "IF PEOPLE SAT OUTSIDE AND LOOKED AT THE STARS EACH NIGHT, I'LL BET THEY'D LIKE A LOT DIFFERENTLY."

Today I tried using a little gouache along with my usual watercolor painting.

This watercolor shows a small man made pond. In the background there’s a faint hill behind an earthen dam a few pines grow in the distance. In the foreground there’s a level piece of ground. The whole scene is filled with weeds.

“Narciso Barranco of Tustin has been identified by his eldest son—Alejandro, a Marine veteran who served in Afghanistan—as the man violently detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents Saturday in Santa Ana. Barranco was at his landscaping job at the IHOP off Edinger and Ritchey when the incident occurred. Barranco also has two sons actively serving in the Marine Corps.” santanero.org/2025/06/21/lands

KTLA - Narciso Barranco, a father to three sons who are all US Marines, pepper-sprayed and punched in the face by alleged federal immigration officers while he was working as a landscaper at an IHOP. He was then forced into the back of an unmarked car in Santa Ana. ktla.com/news/local-news/maske

My left-handed (non-dominant hand) painting of a silly orange cat! I have been occasionally practicing and training my left hand to paint as a backup in case my right hand gets fatigued. This is called "Cat in Boat Pose."

Painting of a silling ginger cat stretching with his feet outstretched snd his eyes closed. The background has a few stripes of color. The artist's signature and @joyousjoyfuljoyness watermark are at the bottom.

Burrowing owls are friggin hilarious!

Photo of a sketchbook page of green pen drawings of Burrowing Owls. There are 8 owls on the page. The top has the text Burrowing Owls 5/22/25. The top left has a drawing of a grumpy owl with the word GRUMP written above it. To the right there is an owl with its head cocked and a question mark above it. To the right of that, there is an owl standing and looking at the viewer, and below that is a hopping owl with the word HOP! At the bottom left is a small yawning owl with the word YAWNNNN written above it. To the right is a posing owl with its wing out and a sassy expression. Along the right page edge are two peeking owls with an exclamation point and a heart next to them.
