Dr. Torrance Hanley (she/her)

I’m an aquatic (#freshwater, #estuarine, and #marine!) community ecologist interested in #EcoEvolution, #Biodiversity, #Conservation, and #Restoration, asking questions from #genes to #ecosystems, and studying #GeneticDiversity in #SaltMarsh, #Seagrass, and #Oyster systems. I’m committed to continued efforts to address systemic biases and pervasive inequities in academia. Here for the science, and the community.

It’s time for our 5th annual United States of Science Challenge!

This is a friendly competition between regions of the US. The first region to fill their bubbles wins!

Each bubble on this map represents classrooms we’ve matched with scientists this year. $10 donations fill bubbles!

Some states got a head start last night 👀

Let’s kick this year off right!
Fill bubbles by donating here 👇🏻

Within my own lifetime, the last 50 years, nearly 80% of the CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels, and close to 60 percent of all GHG emissions have been released.

There's been a near 70% decline in populations of existing wildlife species; and across the 8 million animal and plant species on earth, the human-induced extinction rate is now estimated at tens to hundreds of times greater than natural rates.

#BiodiversityDay reminds us that the profound crises we confront are just different sides of the same coin, and that our future is truly in our hands. The planet doesn't need us: we are the ones who rely on it for all the air we breathe, the water we drink, the resources we need. That's why our choices matter more today than ever: the path to a better future lies through these crises.

JUST PUBLISHED: "A second unveiling: Haplotig masking of the eastern oyster genome improves population-level inference" #Evolution #Genomics #PopGen #oyster onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

A haplotig in an assembly occurs when a single region is split into two places in the reference. We had them everywhere in our first eastern oyster assembly! This causes a bimodal distribution of coverage. This study shows how haplotigs affect pop gen inference and how to improve the reference by masking haplotigs.

Histogram of read coverage across both genome versions. Paired-end Illumina reads used for
polishing the original genome assembly were mapped back to the two genome versions. Filtered read coverage was
averaged across 10kb windows and plotted as a histogram with bins colored by genome: gray for the original and
orange for the haplotig-masked genome

There were less than 5% of attendees wearing masks. Really wish conferences kept mask requirements, at least for the presentation rooms. Seems like a small sacrifice to make things more inclusive. Maybe it would be a good idea to stop serving food and drinks in poster sessions.

To all of those out there who are immunocompromised or who live with or love someone who is, in-person conferences are still a risk. If you go, assume when you come home that you are infected until proven otherwise.

I just added our science blog (jabberwocky.weecology.org/) to the wait list for rogue-scholar.org/, which will automatically archive and provide DOIs for all of our blog posts!

Very excited to see this effort by @mfenner, especially after years of watching key platforms for science blogging turn over and many excellent science blogs largely disappear from the web.

@Kyt_thatsme I have appreciated your voice on social media this past year. I quietly shared some of your experiences, including making one tiny human this year (no comparison!), changing academic positions, going on the job market… and wow am I tired. Thank you also for helping to curb misinformation on (and share frustration with) all things Covid, vaccines, and masking. I hope next year brings you happiness, balance, and rest - plenty of rest.
