One thing I still really like about #python, despite not using for almost a decade now, is that it’s a truly community-owned language.

Go isn’t that. Nor is Swift. Nor C#. Nor Java.

Right now, I think Rust and Python are the two big names that are actually community languages. Maybe JavaScript?

Ruby usage seems to be declining, though it is also community-owned.

Live in Washington or Clackamas County? Support drug treatment instead of incarceration? There’s bad news:

“The funds, the governor and lawmakers said, would go to counties to support a ‘treatment first’ approach, encouraging jurisdictions to get drug users into recovery programs, instead of arresting and jailing them.”

“Some local governments, however, have spent the taxpayer-funded grants to beef up law enforcement.”

Huh. Something I looked into and realized today: Siri and Alexa carry out commands and requests. They use a female voice by default. ChatGPT, Claude, AND Gemini give authoritative answers to questions. They use a male voice by default.

Yeeeeeaaaah... 🙃

This furor over the 8647 foto is performative militarization. Linguists have made clear that 86, in modern parlance, means 'get rid of' or 'ban' and no reference to it being used as a call to assassinate. My ex-girlfriend was 86'ed from almost every bar in #Portland, OR, and survived the ordeal.

I really need folks to stop acting like disability is full of people “scamming” the system.

The average person has no idea how hard it is to qualify. How dehumanizing the process can be. How much you have to sacrifice & give up.

It’s designed to make you quit.

Found in Naomi Klein's Doppelganger. The one lesson I wish the modern left would internalize more than anything.

Use shared language.

Don't use lefty jargon when the person you're talking to doesn't subscribe to these ideas. No white privilege, no colonial oppression, no intersectionality. Translate to a shared language, built on reasonable, common assumptions and do the work required to bring people on board.

Because you can be damned sure the MAGA crowd are doing the work.

“Speak in the vernacular” the radical historian Mike Davis once pleaded with young organiz- ers. “The moral urgency of change acquires its greatest grandeur, when expressed in a shared language"

The word “login” comes from throwing a log attached to a rope with knots overboard a ship to see how many knots go by over time (see also, knots as speed). You’d then put that info in the “log book.” You’d “log in” on a regular basis. This wasn’t from 1959, it was likely from 1689! Etymology baby!

For weeks I have been telling reporters that #Trump could have the power to switch off our tech in #Europe. It felt a bit alarmist until I just read that #Microsoft, on the behest of the #US gov, has suspended the email account of Karim Khan, the #ICC chief prosecutor.

One of the most important international courts and a legal bulwark against #genocide, crimes against humanity, and #warcrimes is threatened by #BigTech dependency.

I'm not going on Bluesky.

I learned from the past.

I'm not investing my time and energy (and data) again in another platform that could get bought by Elon Musk (or another malevolent billionaire) tomorrow.
