@robin @sancla @matrix I agree. Without portability users are currently locked in. But to avoid cost increase the foundation could switch off new user registrations. Clients such as Element should display a curated list of home servers for the user to choose from (free or paid). Curation is probably way more cheaper than actually running the service.

And to add to my previous msg: Though I haven't sponsored the foundation for a while, I have supported individual developers like Tulir directly.

In my opinion operating the free matrix.org home server is no longer needed, especially with all the bridges. Matrix Foundation should focus on standardization and development and not to be a free service provider.

If the foundation pivots to that direction, I'm happy to start funding it again like I did in the early days.
