Dear Ms. Johnson,

I am reaching out to raise significant concerns about the Iroquois Gas Transmission Enhancement by Compression (ExC) project, particularly its role in locking in long-term reliance on methane gas infrastructure.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with far-reaching implications for our climate and public health. Expanding infrastructure to facilitate its continued use creates an enduring dependency that is fundamentally at odds with the urgent need to transition to renewable energy sources. This is not merely a question of emissions today; it is about the decades-long legacy of methane reliance that projects like this perpetuate.

With policies increasingly favoring decarbonization, how does Iroquois reconcile this project with the clear scientific consensus that methane infrastructure poses an unacceptable risk to meeting climate targets? Beyond the immediate operational emissions, the project risks delaying investments in truly sustainable energy solutions, effectively entrenching an outdated energy model.

Communities and future generations deserve more than incremental change; they deserve transformative leadership that prioritizes a rapid shift away from fossil fuels altogether. I urge Iroquois to reconsider its trajectory and take bold steps toward aligning its operations with a net-zero future.

I look forward to hearing how Iroquois plans to address these critical concerns, not just for today, but for the long-term health of our planet and its people.

Sincerely,

Jonathan

Hi Ruth,

I hope this message finds you well, and happy holidays to you. I'm reaching out on behalf of Extinction Rebellion (XR), a global movement known for its creative, non-violent protests that have helped compel legislation, push governments to act, and shift public discourse on the climate and ecological crisis.

As we determine our priorities for 2025, we’ve identified concerns regarding the proposed expansion project in Brookfield. Specifically, our research team noted that the Environmental Sensitivities and Enhancements section of your overview document focuses solely on site-specific impacts. Notably absent are any discussions of the downstream effects of transporting an additional 125 MMcf of methane gas daily.

We believe the public deserves transparency about the broader implications of this project. For instance, the expansion would be responsible for emissions equivalent to 18,150 internal combustion engine vehicles driven for one year and carry over $15 million in climate-related social costs annually.

How do you plan to inform the community about these critical downstream impacts? Would it not be in the public’s interest to present a comprehensive view of the project’s environmental and social consequences?

We look forward to your response.

With love and rage,

This image presents data on potential emission increases from new construction or expansion at a specific site, as well as the equivalent impacts of these emissions. The key details are:

Potential Emission Increases:
Greenhouse Gases (as CO₂e): 89,831 tons per year.
Criteria Air Pollutants: 34.20 tons per year.
Hazardous Air Pollutants: 1,440 pounds per year.
Equivalence of Greenhouse Gas Emissions:
18,150 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year.
0.02 coal-fired power plants operating for one year.
$15,483,565 in climate-related social costs.
18 projected climate change-related deaths.
The visual is designed to connect the numerical data with relatable real-world impacts, emphasizing the environmental and social consequences of the emissions.

Project 2025: Stop the Brookfield Compressor Station Expansion

By: Iroquois Gas Transmission System L.P.

The Brookfield Compressor Station is located in Fairfield County, Connecticut, along Iroquois Gas Transmission's interstate natural gas transmission pipeline system. Iroquois Gas is proposing to expand the Brookfield Compressor as part of the Iroquois Enhancement by Compression Project. The expansion – which also involves the Athens Compressor in Athens, New York, and the Dover Compressor in Dover Plains, New York – would add 125 million cubic feet per day of capacity to Iroquois' pipeline.

We can help stop this, and it involves people in our community. The PR lead at the gas company lives in #trumbull and the ESG Director for the project lives in #easton. The company's corporate headquarters are in #shelton.

By taking action, we can keep the equivalent of 18,150 ICE cars from being driven PER year.

If you want to help organize, please reach out!
