The trainwreck on the horizon is not unstoppable, but the locomotive is accelerating. We need more people pulling on the cables to signal we want off before the crash. The first step in pulling those cables is recognizing where the train is heading locally. If the system isn’t working for your community, start to build one that will. Collaborate with neighbors to build mutual aid networks and develop response plans. Get involved in local government. Pay attention to the things you can control. Local actions reverberate globally.

On New Year’s Day, I set out to reconnoiter a site that embodies the systemic challenges faced by local communities. I went to see Iroquois Gas Transmission System’s Brookfield Compressor Station.

There, standing in the light rain, the hum of the facility drowned out the sound of the few remaining leaves in the breeze. Along the residential street leading to the site, signs opposing further expansion of the infrastructure serve as a quiet testament to the community’s concerns. The project’s goal is to expand pipeline capacity by increasing the pressure of the methane gas within.

While systemic violence often stays hidden, it manifests through policies and projects that prioritize short-term profits over long-term well-being. Standing at the gate, I began to wonder how many people it would take to block the road.

The assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has once again brought America’s healthcare crisis to the forefront. Luigi Mangione, charged with murder at the state and federal levels, was arrested with a ghost gun and a manifesto in his possession. There is no doubt the gun will be used as evidence by prosecutors. The manifesto, and the public’s reaction to the killing, will present a challenge for the state. As it should.

Project 2025: Stop the Brookfield Compressor Station Expansion

The Brookfield Compressor Station is located in Fairfield County, Connecticut, along Iroquois Gas Transmission's interstate natural gas transmission pipeline system. Iroquois Gas is proposing to expand the Brookfield Compressor as part of the Iroquois Enhancement by Compression Project. The expansion – which also involves the Athens Compressor in Athens, New York, and the Dover Compressor in Dover Plains, New York – would add 125 million cubic feet per day of capacity to Iroquois' pipeline.

We can help stop this, and it involves people in our community. The PR lead at the gas company lives in #trumbull and the ESG Director for the project lives in #easton. The company's corporate headquarters are in #shelton.

By taking action, we can keep the equivalent of 18,150 ICE cars from being driven PER year.
