Diagram with three tiers of words and illustration. 1) clouds and raindrops falling on car on paved road: "Rain falls on roadways." 2) culvert below road, left side with hard wall by culvert, right side with green growth, probably marsh and weeds: "Tire wear particles (6PPD-q) mix into runoff". results are 3) left side with dead fish downstream of culvert , text begins with red x: "Salmon migrating during storm events are exposed to 6PPD-q related contaminants" , right side with live fish before and after culvert, text begins with green checkmark: " Green infrastructure decreases 6PPD-q exposure and other vehicle related contaminants"

ist wohl ziemlich tödlich für Wasser-Organismen

in Kanada bzw. seattle sterben nach stärkeren Regenfällen und dadurch in Flüsse gespült Schadstoffe von der Strasse regelmäßig große teile der Lachspopulation.

A 2020 paper revealed the cause of mortality: a chemical called that is added to tires to prevent their cracking and degradation. When 6PPD, which occurs in tire dust, is exposed to ground-level ozone, it’s transformed into multiple other chemicals, including 6PPD-quinone, or 6PPD-q. The compound is acutely toxic to four of 11 tested fish species, including coho salmon.

Toxic dust from tires is flowing into waterways from roads and highways, where it kills some species of salmon and trout.

Assemblymember Papan recently introduced legislation to remove these toxic tire particles before they slip into waterways and kill fish:

Car tires pollute by releasing 6PPD—and regulators like the EPA are finally doing something about it.

slate.com/technology/2023/11/c

> Regulators—and a reluctant industry—are finally starting to deal with it.

>...we are only starting to understand its impact on wildlife and human health... such dangers could rise if consumers shift toward heavier, overpowered electric vehicles that shred tires faster...

Washington state is responding to a federal court injunction to remove fish migration barriers from undersized highway culverts and restore spawning habitat.
Meanwhile, pressure is on to develop green infrastructure that removes toxins like 6PPD from storm runoff and improves water quality in these restored habitat areas.
