California is free of drought and abnormal dryness for the first time since 2000. The state has also experienced periods with less than 1% of abnormal dryness in 2005 and 2011.

A generally dry and hot week worsened dryness and drought conditions in every state in the South. This has been drying up pastures across much of the region.

USDM Hot Topic January 8, 2026: the South. This week, abnormal dryness or drought coverage in the South increased from 84.94% to 91.44%. Moderate drought or worse expanded from 51.76% to 66.49%. Severe drought or worse increased from 16.38% to 23.03%. Extreme drought or worse rose from 5.35% to 5.63%. Exceptional drought remained at 0.18%.

Drought expanded significantly from the Central and Southern Plains to the East Coast. In the West, large swaths of improvement occurred. Drought (D1-D4) covered 44.82% of the contiguous US, a jump of 1.99 points, as parts of the Southeast continued to dry out.

Dryness or drought worsened in parts of the High Plains (with improvement in Wyoming), South and Southeast.

Conditions improved in much of the West, with areas of degradation in Washington and Utah. Hawaii and Puerto Rico also saw improvement. The Midwest and Northeast saw mixed conditions.
