@felyashono You don't need to make devices #thicc|er or heavier just by making them #repairable.

  • #Sony's Vaio #P11Z did have a toolfree-removeable battery yet it was less than 15mm thick and weighted ~560g with the standard battery and even <750g with an obscenely thicc aftermarket battery.

  • #Fairphone's devices are just as #thinn as any other #smartphone, yet they offer toolfree replaceable batteries!

  • #rectangular / #prismatic cells exist. Just because you rarely see them compared to 14500/18650/21700 cylinders but that doesn't mean they ain't available.

  • if #Framework didn't decide to go with a *"pan"-style design, they could've made their flat #battery toolfree-swappable just as the Aforementioned VAIO.

There are other ways to make a device thinner and lighter, ranging from Magnesium to fiber reinforced plastic to carbon fiber. Some #ThinkPad|s did all 3.

  • Not to mention sticking batteries in makes replacements unnecessary dangerous and can yield users to not replace "#DangerPillow|s" until they crack the housong or most likely the screen.

Also most of the gains in terms of battery runtime are attributeabke to better battery chemistry, higher grade cells by modern standards and lower power consumption by smaller process nodes (65nm @ 1,5V -> 7nm @ 0,85V can basically reduce power by 90% without any tricks!) and more powerful chips that more dynamically switch to low power states transparently. (Which is why you often get 4 different TDP ratings on some chips, with nominal, maximum & minimum configureable maximums and typical @ nominal settings)…

#AntiRepairDesign is a choice by the manufacturer. #IP68, #ATEX & #MILSTD810 can be achieved without glueing shit together!

@leffe @CppGuy @Jessica I can totally understand such solutions:

Having handled #ex / #ATEX-certified & #rugged #PTT-Radios and -Phones that basically only have charging docks and a programming port behind the toolfree-swappable, screwed-on battery at the rear, the appeal is obvious in that these devices can be rugged as a #Nokia3301 and often need to as sometimes workers' safety if not survival depends on them to properly sent out alerts if they have an accident.

  • OFC beyond the battery being swappable, these didn't offer any repariability aside from the manufacturer's service center for said compliance reasons, but it's not as if these were ever sold to the average consumer and that places that used them didn't have spare devices and batteries onsite in case someone had issues with their handset.

So unless it's like a high-security device that has to withstand being thrown into a deep thank of gasoline and kept on-person diving, there's rarely a need to seal things up (okay, with medical devices one may need that too, but again: edgecases!)

@RayuDW Yeah...

IMHO, #GluedInBattieries that are not #ToolfreeSwappable, #SolderedDownRAM & #SolderedDownFlash should be outlawed.

There's no legitimate reason to put #design and #AntiRepair before #Repairability - certainly not with #consumer hardware that isn't #ATEX-certified nor expected to retain water-tightness at 50m depth after being shot at with a .357 Maximum...

#AntiRepairDesign dient nur dazu, Verbraucher abzuzocken (siehe #Apple)...

@BryanGreyson @EU_Commission

IMHO the only valid excuse would be something where having a toolfree-replaceable battery would make it impossible to make a device #ATEX compliant...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATEX_dir

But then again, I have a flashlight that is and all that needs is a single screw to keep it shut and even #waterproof...

@tuxedocomputers Sadly, @EU_Commission didn't mandate toolfree swappable & removeable batteries in all devices with only #ATEX or Pressurized Water / Diving-Certified equipment, and even those could be made easily maintainable.
