Oh oh, I haven't done anything here for a really long time—but health comes first.

And to make matters worse, I lost a very, very good friend more than a week ago, who was taken by the damn MRSA germ... Rest in peace, my friend, you will never be forgotten! 😢

But during my own convalescence, I had enough time to return to my roots with Linux and switch my systems back to the tried and tested, beloved, and familiar. And I'm now leaving the time of experiments and trials behind me for good. In the end, you always find your way back to what has worked best for you for a long time, right?

So my main system is running Fedora Linux again, my second system is running Debian, and my ThinkPad P51 is running FreeBSD as always.

My ThinkPad T490s is running a completely slimmed-down version of Windows 10 IoT LTSC because of the built-in LTE modem, which cannot be made to work under any version of Linux. And I need this feature when I'm on the go, plus I'm paying for the SIM card with a contract. Apart from that, the battery life is significantly better with the slimmed-down Windows 10 than with Linux. Unfortunately, that's a fact.

So that's how things stand as we head into the new year.

I really feel for this guy. This was me 10 years ago: having my entire digital life wrapped up around #Apple's feckless and capricious "tender mercies." I wasn't an author or dev or anything, and I never encountered anything quite that disastrous, but it could have happened at any time.

The process of removing Apple's many tendrils from my digital life was long and somewhat painful, although accelerated by 1) Apple abandoning my MacBook after only four years of OS updates, 2) Apple abandoning my mom's iMac after 7 years (not as egregious), 3) accidentally spilling tea on my beloved 2014 MBA in 2019,and 4) not being able to afford to replace all that hardware 😄, 5) and buying an old #Thinkpad in 2019 ("just for writing!") that became my gateway drug to using Linux and other FOSS OSes full-time. :)

P.S., Maybe don't link to his blog post if your toot contains 0% compassion for the guy. People aren't object lessons, they're people.

Ich repariere und upgrade schon sehr lange Thinkpads, aber ich habe noch nie vorher diese elegante Lösung gesehen, aus einer msata half card eine mit kompletter Länge zu machen. Einfach aufstecken und anschrauben. 💜

I solved a problem with the #Intel HD Graphics 520 on my #Thinkpad X270, namely DRI3 was not enabled in #xlibre and provoking warnings from mpv and odd results from glxgears.

The power supply going into the side of my #ThinkPad P1 (instead of the back like every one of my T-series) is the source of endless frustration. In addition to it being clunky and visible at all times, there's also barrel-shaped some electrical component about three inches out from the end of the cable that is *constantly* catching on the edge of my table/desk.

Habe mein x220 neu aufgesetzt (weil Devuan leider nicht so ausgereift ist, wie ich gern hätte) mit Debian und hach, ich liebe das Gerät, aber Hardware-technisch ist es leider echt mühsam schon damit. 😔

Aber die Tastatur, mah... 🤤

2024 war bei mir das Jahr des iPhones (mit fraenk). Ich habe zuviel Zeit im Krankenhaus verbracht und dort hat mich das iPhone bestens unterhalten. Verbindung per 5G, weil das WLAN grottenschlecht war.

I just realized that my primary driver for 25 Years (!) now has been a 14" #Thinkpad... from my first T20 in Oct 2000 to my current P14s, from IBM to Lenovo, from the T series to the P now, and from Widows 98 to Windows 10 (still).

wtf why did they change the hinges between T420 and T430 displays????????

the differences are so minor that this makes no sense to chamge them between models considering that the T430 is more of a T420 REV 2 with all the other interchangable parts

so why did they pick new hinge models that make T420 and T430 hinges incompatible without further mods on either the lid or the hinge?????

@michal those TN panels are absolute trash, bottom of the barrel, just overall awful experience. I have one on my T430 (HD+, 1600x900), and if if would have been my only laptop, I would certainly replace it with some IPS panel. Tho, it has to be said, not all ThinkPad's IPS are created equal, and basic fullHD ones still leave a lot to be desired (those 45% NTSC have still pretty bad color gamut). The only one panel, which looks as it should (like basically any normal standalone PC monitor in the last decade) is QHD panel on my T470p (72% NTSC).

Tak som dnes vymenil noťas, T470 za T480... Jak som ho doniesol domov, tak som musel oba noťase rozobrať, aby som mohol prehodiť vnútornú baterku, RAMky a disk. A to celé len skrz to, aby som mal ďalšie 4 biele obdĺžničky...
