W Tarnowskich Górach nigdy nie byłam – choć przecież nie wiem, czy los kiedyś mnie tam nie zaprowadzi. Jeśli tak się stanie, nie omieszkam odwiedzić cmentarza żydowskiego, pewno także zapytam o drogę do starego Fazosu – i to niewątpliwie będzie zasługa antologii „Tarnowskie Góry. Miejskie opowieści 2”. Pewno wspomnę też ciepło osieroconego Piotrusia i jego perypetie z wyborem zawodu, zadumam się nad losem Tarniny albo niezwykłych komediantów czasu zarazy. Książkę polecam gorąco, bo nie ma w niej tekstów amatorsko słabych.

It had been decided to operate a shift cycle, whereby while one cosmonaut slept the other two would be on duty. Their staggered daily cycles involved eight hours on duty, eight hours off duty, and eight hours of sleep. In earlier, smaller, spacecraft this had not been feasible because the cosmonauts would have been in each other’s way, but the ferry’s orbital module was turned into a dormitory. The off-duty time included all toiletries, meals and exercises. Following the results of Soyuz 9, the exercise regime included a 40-minute session after breakfast and a further 80 minutes accumulated during the day. The gymnasium included a variety of elasticated expanders and a moving-belt treadmill (called the KTF) built into the floor across the centre of the main compartment (an elasticated harness was worn to draw the user against it to provide the necessary traction). It was hoped that a balanced exercise programme would stave off the muscular atrophy which, despite their efforts, had afflicted Nikolayev and Sevastyanov, but this imposed a significant overhead, reducing the time available for work, although if that was the price of surviving in space, then so be it. Psychologists monitored the video downlink to study the crew, and quickly realised that weightlessness rendered assessment of interrelationships based on body language impractical because these were based on postures and gestures appropriate to physical orientations imposed by gravity.Despite the fact that the decor imposed a strict sense of up and down, in space the crewmen floated in random orientations, which made it difficult to assess their facial expressions; this was made worse by the pooling of blood in the head, which distorted facial features. In addition, the pitch of the voice was altered, and for a while the psychologists mistakenly believed that the cosmonauts were under a great deal of stress, whereas in fact they were delighted to be in space. [...] The routine was disturbed on 18 June, when a small electrical fire in a cable was discovered. The cosmonauts became so alarmed that they urged ground controllers to let them evacuate the station, but in weightlessness a fire in an oxygen-nitrogen mix is not so great a danger because in the absence of convection to draw off the resultant carbon dioxide and draw in new oxygen it suffocates. Nevertheless, they powered up their ferry just in case, a fact which did not escape the Western observers monitoring the telemetry signals. As soon as it became evident that there was indeed no danger, the cosmonauts re-entered the station and resumed work. But their pioneering spirit appeared to have been broken, and a week later it was decided to let them return to Earth early. On 29 June, therefore, they packed the film canisters and the results of their experiments into the cramped Soyuz descent module, and returned the station to its automatic flight regime.The transfer tunnel was overpressurised to check for a leaky hatch and then vented. They undocked and, laughing and joking because they were happy to be heading home, aligned the spacecraft for the de-orbit manoeuvre. There was a premature loss of signal, but the recovery team that gathered around the capsule on the steppe did not know this, and when they opened the hatch they were appalled to find Dobrovolsky, Patsayev and Volkov dead in their couches. An enquiry eventually determined that a tiny valve in the descent module that was designed to equalise the pressure during the final stage of the parachute descent had been shaken open by the shock from the explosive bolts that had jettisoned the orbital and service modules. Analysis of the telemetry revealed that even though the leaking air had rotated the descent module, the automatic system had acted to correct this. Although the overly violent separation would have alerted the cosmonauts to a malfunction, the status of this valve was not monitored and they would have been distracted as the air began to vent. Nevertheless, on noting that they were losing air, they had attempted to access the valve, but because this had not been intended to be accessed by the crew it was inconveniently located and they were unable to close it. Soyuz cosmonauts did not wear pressure suits for launch and re-entry, so they first succumbed to unconsciousness resulting from asphyxiation as the pressure fell, then died from embolism of the blood.They were exposed to vacuum for fully 12 minutes before, on entering the lower atmosphere, the capsule was repressurised through the still-open valve. Fortunately, the re-entry manoeuvres and the parachute deployment were automatic. Dobrovolsky, Patsayev and Volkov – familiar faces to the nation as a result of their nightly television shows – were ceremoniously laid out in Moscow the next day, and their ashes subsequently entombed in the Kremlin Wall, together with their fallen colleagues Yuri Gagarin and Vladimir Komarov and former chief spacecraft designer Sergei Korolev. It took almost two weeks for the official announcement to be issued. In the interim, there was speculation that they had succumbed to the 3 g deceleration of re-entering the atmosphere. The pessimists argued that the deaths of *all three* men proved that there was indeed a limit to the time that the human body could spend in weightlessness. However, there was so little difference between their 23-day flight and Soyuz 9’s 18-day flight that it was soon accepted that some other fate must have befallen them. When it was realised that they had died *prior to* reentry it became clear that deceleration forces had played no part in their demise. The conclusion was that the station had performed well, and there was no evidence of a limit to the time a crew could spend in space; the problem with the Soyuz ferry was a secondary issue.
