Random throwaway line in the Wikipedia article on the Judaeo-Spanish language:

“In the Middle Ages, the word Latin was frequently used to mean simply 'language', particularly one understood: a latiner or latimer meant a translator.”

It’s from the Anglo-Norman ‘latinier’, which reflects that during the transitional years of the Norman Conquest, people who could speak and write Latin were invaluable for formalising legal documents such as land deeds:

John Bernard Burke’s 1848 book ‘The Roll of Battle Abbey’ observes:

“This surname is said to have been adopted from the tenure of certain lands, which required the possessor thereof to act as ‘latimer,’ or interpreter.”

You can see how in transcription, the ‘ni’ of ‘Latinier’ could merge to become an ‘m’ in Latimer

This immediately made me think of Richmond Lattimore (1906–1984), the American classicist whose verse translations of the Iliad (1951) and Odyssey (1965) are considered very faithful to the original Homeric Greek, and were used for decades to teach classical studies

How delightful that Lattimore’s career had such nominative determinism!

When I studied the Odyssey in high school, however, we used the 1991 Penguin Classics prose translation by EV Rieu (1887–1972), revised by his son DCH Rieu (1916–2008).

In his introduction, DCH had a bit of a potted intro to previous translations, which is how I first heard of Lattimore

I loved studying classics but then I never went on to do more with it. I would love to have learned #AncientGreek in particular, but it seems so dauntingly difficult now

A few weeks ago I found a 1960s book called ‘Teach Yourself Ancient Greek’ in an op-shop and was tempted to buy it, but its methods were not intuitive and I could just see myself getting frustrated so I put it back

I finished the pitiful #Duolingo #Latin course which is so bad that it doesn’t even teach any tenses other than present indicative, and the only animals I can talk about are dog, owl, weasel, fish and peacock

πᾶσι all for πανσ-σι out of παντ-σι, τιθεῖσι placing for τιθενσ-σι out of τιθεντ-σι. So γίγα_ς giant for γιγαντ-ς, λύ_ουσι loosing for λυ_οντ-σι, σπείσω shall make libation for σπενδ-σω, πείσομαι shall suffer for πενθ-σομαι (πένθος grief).
