If you’re looking for a good thriller/mystery movie that does justice to OSINT, cybersecurity, and privacy, here’s a recommendation for you. (For the benefit of some who will read this, OSINT is “open source intelligence.” Simple examples include doing a Google search on a person’s name, or looking at their Instagram account).
Friday night my wife and I watched “Relay” on Netflix. Without giving any spoilers, the story is about a woman named Sarah Grant (played by Lily James) who hires a “fixer” (unnamed character, played by Riz Ahmed) to act as an intermediary in a whistleblower incident with a large and powerful corporation.
Sarah makes initial contact with the fixer by calling a phone number and leaving a voicemail. Shortly thereafter, we see the fixer doing OSINT research on Sarah using the computer at a public library. He looks at her company profile, and some social media accounts.
My wife asked me, “Wait – he just got a voicemail from her. How does he know who she is to be looking up all this information?” I picked up the remote and backed it up a bit so she could re-watch the part where the fixer plays the voicemail. Sara provided her first and last name, and her phone number.
I said, “With first and last name and a phone number, you can find out almost anything about most people.” She said, “That’s a little disconcerting.”
(BTW, I’ve taught OSINT at colleges and private corporate training events. After the demo, I give the students a worksheet and thirty minutes to see what they can come up with on a person of their choice. My last class was in October in Atlanta. Contact me if you want to schedule something for your company, in person or via webinar).
Anyway, back to the movie. It gets a lot of stuff right, and it keeps you interested all the way through. There are a couple of things that I could quibble about, but I’d rather emphasize something they did really well: they showed how hard it is to be truly anonymous on the Internet.
