Died Pretty â Free Dirt (1986, Australia)
As randomly chosen by survey[1] on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 203 on The List, submitted by joostverweij.
Feeling pretty basic (/low on spoons), so hereâs some bare bones facts about this one:
The band was originally named âFinal Solutionâ after the 1976 single by Pere Ubu, which was itself named after the Sherlock Holmesâ book The Final Problem.
Free Dirt is Died Prettyâs debut album. It has a great cover. Itâs 40 minutes and 10 tracks long. Itâs lovely. Itâs only been reissued on vinyl once, in 2022.
The band would go on to release 7 more studio albums, the last in 2000. Their 4th, Doughboy Hollow (1991), is considered by some to be their best.
They have a (now possibly defunct) blog run by guitarist/backing vocalist Brett Myers with some cool archive videos and whatnot.
Ron S. Peno, the lead singer, left us, in 2023 (RIP).
Hope youâre hanging in there, all.
- The survey choices that initially led to this spotlight were âYou, I would die 4 U, yeahâ, âDarling, if you want me toâ, and âYou, I would die 4 Uâ, following a survey that had âIâm not a woman, Iâm not a manâ/âI am something that youâll never understandâ/âIâll never beat you, I never lieâ/âAnd if youâre evil Iâll forgive you by and by cuzâ. The third option was the winning selection, and so the survey result was translated as picking the third album in The List that contained a word in the phrase â in this case, âdieâ. â©ïž
