The original #BECMI attack matrix also builds in "1 will always miss," so I can't say the matrix is the problem. The problem is that #OldSchoolEssentials tries to have it both ways by bolting #ADnD's THAC0 onto an incompatible matrix.
I encountered a similar disconnect between THAC0 calculations and traditional attack matrices in #ADnD, but that difference was correctable with a simple attack modifier because the AD&D matrix is more linear then the #BECMI matrix #OldSchoolEssentials borrows.

My #DnD gaming has been sporadic since before Christmas, but things are finally coming back around. My current active games:
Temple of Elemental Evil, 2nd edition #ADnD rules.
Horror on the Hill, #BECMI / Rules Cyclopedia.
5th Edition campaign set in my own world, currently dealing with a village beset by werewolves.
I enjoy them all. The system jumping can be a bit disorienting at times, though. 😅
I really want to play some old school #dungeonsanddragons like #becmi or #adnd 2nd Edition. But I am a 46 year old man with few nerdy friends. I really wish I hadn't been so shy when I was younger and surrounded by fantasy nerds and people were begging me to play tabletop #rpg games with them.

Expert set. It’s the German Edition and I need it to play #becmi dnd with my kid (9) and his friends. It is also one of the most beautiful dnd versions of all times from my point of view with its peak 80s black and white art.
- A ridiculously cheap #Traveller rules book (German ed). I thought it was a reprint of classic Traveller, but turned out to be Mongoose 1st edition. Traveller = Most confusing publication history ever

No electronics. Just books, paper, pencils, dice, and some friends (pending arrival), as the Olde Gods intended. 🤣
Old-school #DnD like #BECMI and AD&D is far from perfect, but the added complexity of 5e doesn't "add" to its value in my personal opinion.
Interestingly, the views of the players in the tweens group I run through the local library agree -- they are happy with the simpler rules we're running with Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy. #ttrpg #ADnD
@DM_Zeppelin I have seen that the players themselves being smart or non-smart generally (but not always) has a bigger impact on party success than the rules-set they're playing.
It's arguably easier for a character to die in BECMI rules than in 5e, but if the players are smart, they can be very successful. #DnD #ttrpg #ttrpgs #BECMI

I agree! The rules I use are circa 1980, refreshed and currently in print by a wonderful company called Necrotic Gnome (Old-School Essentials), and even the group of tweens at the #DnD group I DM through my local library have wholeheartedly endorsed our #BECMI slash #OSR rules over the bit of 5e they've played. #ttrpg
