BrewDog CEO James Watt invests £10,000 in Swansea’s “game changing brand” Cosi Care
Last week James Watt MBE, former BrewDog CEO, announced a lucrative opportunity for emerging businesses to win £2M investment on his new TV show, ‘House of Unicorns’.
In a bid to find stand-out ‘unicorn’ businesses, Watt called on his 140,000 Instagram followers to submit their pitch via the social media platform, where one business could take home a £10,000 investment and a shortlist on the show.
James and his House of Unicorns team announced Cosi Care as the winners of the £10,000 comment pitch, describing them as a “game-changing brand helping kids with severe skin conditions” for their world-first range of safe-scratching devices.
James praised the innovative brand, commenting “The mission is insanely compelling, and the execution is brilliant” before announcing the investment.
The competition tasked stand-out businesses to pitch their brand’s proposition in an Instagram comment that would “blow him away”.
On a mission to do that, Cosi Care founder, Lauren Bell not only gave a compelling pitch but also donated £10,000 worth of their new Puffer Itch Roller safe-scratching device to those navigating chronically itchy, uncomfortable skin conditions.
Responding to the news, Lauren commented:
“We are beyond thrilled to have won this investment and to have our business front of mind with James and the House of Unicorns team. This £10,000 will make all the difference in moving our fast-growing team into a collaborative new work space, allowing us to continue evolving and innovating.”
“If we’re lucky enough to develop further in the competition and show, the funding would be a game changer in expanding our UK manufacturing operations, making it easier for our community to care for their skin everyday with the launch of skincare and electronic cooling devices.”
Knowing first hand how impactful eczema can be, Lauren’s founder story began after taking care of her younger brother Rhys for months when he was left house and bed bound by Topical Steroid Withdrawal from years of treating eczema.
Desperate to find a solution, Lauren created her own Cooling Scratch Star, a medical-grade innovative device with fingernail-like bumps and a cooling finish to mimic the sensation of scratching, without risk of damage or infection.
“He scratched his skin until it bled, resulting in scars, multiple life-threatening infections and the deterioration of his mental health.
“20% of the population will suffer with chronic itch at some point in life due to conditions like eczema, psoriasis, hives, liver disease, diabetes… the list is endless,” continued Lauren.
“We are the only company in the world that creates safe scratching medical devices, offering instant cooling relief without the damage of scratching with dirty fingernails. We invented the viral Scratch Star, with a long list of products to follow. We are changing how the world manages itchy skin, it’s time to outmatch the scratch.”
Dedicated to always giving back to their community, last year Cosi Care launched a free Scratch Survival Guide, providing chronic itch sufferers and their loved ones with a support guide to help manage the physical and mental impact of an extreme skin condition.
Previously Lauren has been successfully selected for a number of prestigious business opportunities, from winning Mayor of London Entrepreneur of the Year 2019 to most recently becoming the only UK-based semi-finalist for 43North, an global business accelerator competition in Buffalo.
Lauren hopes to progress further into the House of Unicorns competition, seeking further investment that could allow Cosi Care to make a difference to lives of itchy skin sufferers all over the world.
