I give up on beancount. I finally had it installed with brew, yay. After trying everthing else (docker lazy-beancount, github directly, favagtk via flatpak, toolboxes). Mind you i'm on an immutable fedora system (ublue).
Only to run into new issues with deprecated commands i got from the "documentation". I'm cool with tinkering, learning by doing, thinking myself into complex things. But there is a... Limit to your love (james blake voice).
On to hledger
For those of you who are into #PlainTextAccounting: Which software are you using and why?
I'd like to finally start personal accounting again. I stopped when #YNAB became SaaS. YNAB's "envelope budgeting" worked really well for me, and I'd like to get back to a similar workflow. (Or, if you think you know something superior, let me know!)
I'm very open to comments and suggestions here, but it has to be open source software.
I think I'm giving up at keeping track of my money with Beancount, adding transactions to it is painful, so I always end up procastinating it, and after a couple months of procastination figuring everything out is pretty much impossible...
Maybe I should make my own simpler but quicker tool for that instead...

This is the best double-entry personal accounting system, leaving any others standing in dust. The core of the system is a text database, which I manage in VSCode with the related extension, and of course I store the file in Github private repo.
From Beancount is derived excellent graphical reports system called #Fava - you don't have to use it, but it's also very cool.
For me, the spin-off value from Beancount is that, being a text database, it also functions as my diary. I can and do annotate it. My journal begins in 2009 and is uninterrupted. Those were important years of my family life, all recorded in perhaps obsessive detail.

Today, for the first time in several years of reading, I seem to be getting the hang of #plaintextaccounting [1]. Whenever I have read the #beancount [2] docs in the past, I have found the concept incredibly difficult to understand. However, after stumbling across the #Hibiscus project [3], with a focus on German #banking, and several other tools (ofxget, beancount_reds_imp.), I seem to be making progress!

Going through #beancount's documentation and being overwhelmed when it's supposed to be the "easier" of the #plaintextaccounting tools (compared to #ledger) makes me feel a lot of trepidation for trying to set this up.
Almost all the documentation for these tools seems to assume you already have a file set up with your accounts information to some degree.

Having way more fun than expected writing bank importers for #beancount. Can't wait to get things flowing seamlessly enough to actually keep up with my finances on a monthly basis instead of scrambling at the end of every year
