There comes a time in the life of every presenter when they can’t figure out why a particular slide has suddenly popped up in their presentation.
This is me, today, trying and failing to understand why I wanted to show this map in my talk about my book, He Did Not Conquer: Benjamin Franklin’s Failure to Annex Canada.
It only came to me later that this was what France wanted the boundaries of Canada and the United States to look like at the end of the American Revolution. The US and Britain had other ideas.
The audience was gracious about this slight blip, and asked some great questions. I want to thank Alexandra Gheciu of the Centre for International Policy Studies for inviting me to talk, and the CIPS team, including Noah Dreyfuss, for making it happen.
