#BookPublishers #AI #GenerativeAI #AITraining #Books #Publishers #Copyright #IP: "What's far more likely is that PRH will use whatever legal rights it has to insist that AI companies pay it for the right to train chatbots on the books we write. It is vanishingly unlikely that PRH will share that license money with the writers whose books are then shoveled into the bot's training-hopper. It's also extremely likely that PRH will try to use the output of chatbots to erode our wages, or fire us altogether and replace our work with AI slop.

This is speculation on my part, but it's informed speculation. Note that PRH did not announce that it would allow authors to assert the contractual right to block their work from being used to train a chatbot, or that it was offering authors a share of any training license fees, or a share of the income from anything produced by bots that are trained on our work.

Indeed, as publishing boiled itself down from the thirty-some mid-sized publishers that flourished when I was a baby writer into the Big Five that dominate the field today, their contracts have gotten notably, materially worse for writers:"

I read most of the science fiction books shown in this article when I was a teenager! So wonderful to learn more about the people, who were obviously passionate about their jobs, behind the stories...

#InternetArchive #DigitalLending #DigitalLibraries #BookPublishers #eBooks #eLending #Books #Copyright: "On Sept 4, 2024, the US Court of Appeals in New York affirmed the lower court ruling in the lawsuit filed against us by Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, John Wiley & Sons, and Penguin Random House. While the Internet Archive is disappointed by this opinion—it was never the Internet Archive’s intention to get into a lawsuit over lending digitized books—we respect the outcome.

To date, we have removed over 500,000 books from lending on archive.org (and therefore also openlibrary.org). While we are reviewing all available options, this judicial opinion will lead to the removal of many more books from lending. It is important for the Internet Archive and all libraries to continue to have a healthy relationship with publishers and authors.

Please be assured that millions of digitized books will still be available to those with print disabilities, small sections will be available for those linking into them from Wikipedia and through interlibrary loan, books will continue to be preserved for the long term, and other protected library uses will continue to inform digital learners everywhere."

They can either petition for a rehearing, or petition the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case, an even more intense process, since the court only takes a handful of cases per year.

“We think the Internet Archive really was serving a transformative purpose and doing what libraries have always done: Loaning out books that they owned to one person at a time,” Gagliano said. “Our take is that it’s absurd that the Internet Archive is allowed to mail me a physical book it owns. The physical publishers can’t stop that. But [the Archive] can’t give me the same content in digital form.”"

#InternetArchive #eBooks #DigitalLibraries #DigitalLending #BookPublishers #Copyright #IP #Censorship: "More than 500,000 books have been taken out of lending as a result of Hachette v. Internet Archive, the publishers’ lawsuit against our library, including more than 1,300 banned and challenged books.

We are appealing the decision that led to these takedowns in an effort to restore access to these books for all of our patrons."

#Books #BookPublishing #BookPublishers #Antitrust #Competition: "The Big Five publishing houses spend most of their money on book advances for big celebrities like Britney Spears and franchise authors like James Patterson and this is the bulk of their business. They also sell a lot of Bibles, repeat best sellers like Lord of the Rings, and children’s books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar. These two market categories (celebrity books and repeat bestsellers from the backlist) make up the entirety of the publishing industry and even fund their vanity project: publishing all the rest of the books we think about when we think about book publishing (which make no money at all and typically sell less than 1,000 copies).

But let’s dig into everything they said in detail."

This move reaffirms Internet Archive’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling our mission of providing universal access to all knowledge, even in the face of steep legal challenges." blog.archive.org/2024/04/19/in

I’m going to stop tagging #bookpublishers in my post unless they or their library marketers are actually here. No one is monitoring these automated Twitter mirror accounts like twtr.plus or bird.makeup. They don’t pay any attention to anything being said on #Mastodon about their #books, they have no REAL presences here, and that’s a shame. They are missing a big opportunity to speak with thousands of READERS. For example @penguinrandom@twtr.plus cannot see or hear us. @penguinrandom@twitter.piriklub.eu ditto.

@torrentfreak Copyright should go back to 14 years, with one 14-year renewal term. This would follow the letter and spirit of the #Constitution, as copyright was originally intended to be.

#copyright was never intended to be a continuing income stream for the creator, and certainly not for the #heirs and #estates.

"Publishers beat Internet Archive as judge rules e-book lending violates copyright

Internet Archive: Judge’s copyright ruling is a “blow to all libraries.”"

The Internet Archive kept many books and media lost to time alive for us. So many pieces of lost media, including vintage films, books someone uploaded from their personal collection, political news that got scrubbed off the world, to name a few.

But alas, this is the gardening company deciding to burn down the seed vaults because nobody will buy their packaged seeds.

By the way, if they believed they could get away with it, they would definitely try to outlaw physical libraries as well.
