Lviv BookForum Persists Amid Russian Missile Strike
Fiona Benson, a poet involved in Exeter University’s Ukrainian Wartime Poetry project, recounts her experience at Lviv’s BookForum, Ukraine’s largest literary festival. Invited by Ukrainian poet-soldier Artur Dron and translator Yuliya Musakovska, Benson traveled to Lviv, a city in western Ukraine, ... [More info]

A review in Bookforum of The Night Ocean, which is a fictionalized telling of some events in HP Lovecraft’s Life, with a memorable cameo from Burroughs. I am not a Lovecraft person but the story swept me up. #hplovecraft #williamburroughs #bookforum

“If New York can still lay claim to a #literary community in the age of the internet, then #Bookforum was one of its central nodes, a place where upstarts and established names alike could meet on the page.” https://www.vulture.com/2022/12/bookforum-magazine-closing.html #writers #books
"Whereas other countries have publishing houses running literary magazines and a semblance of public funding for the arts, culture in the United States follows the dictates of capitalism, and small organizations must rely on one form of patronage or another."

A lovely elegy for #BookForum by Ann Kjellberg:
"in Bookforum a book could count on informed, focused, demanding attention... There was a sense of play, of sometimes gritty glamour, but also a jolt of intellectual rigor."

“For so many of us in the book world, [#Bookforum] represented a kind of critical apotheosis, positioned in the middle territory between service #journalism and the academy…I’m tired of losing outlets to conglomeration. I’m tired of #culture being under siege because of money, of corporations and the wealthy buying platforms and destroying them just because they can.” —David L. Bookforum shutting down.
The slow, methodical vanishing of serious (but curious) literary contemplation proceeds...
This final issue (or not?) on Hilton Als (on Prince!), Colette, N.K. Jemison's NYC, Sasha Frere-Jones on the art of Gordon Matta-Clark, new Cormac McCarthy novels (that makes me want to read at least one of them).
I've truly enjoyed Bookforum, and it is a shame this is probably its last issue.
RIP #Bookforum
Breaks my heart - one of my favorite magazines
Hate that this is almost certainly the last issue #BookForum
Great reporting and a quick turnaround at @hyperallergic on the shuttering of #Bookforum days after Penske Media acquired the magazine’s parent company and sister pub Artforum. Penske “has over 20 brands in its roster” https://hyperallergic.com/787127/rip-bookforum/ #magazines
I had my issues with BOOKFORUM. (I once received a particularly nasty and snobby email from an editor there -- the kind of needless and deranged vitriol that leads to fistfights in bars -- when I pitched them more than a decade ago.) But it was, for all of its faults, a vital outlet for thoughtful books coverage, which is increasingly less practiced. Make no mistake: the end of BOOKFORUM is a huge loss.
Apologies for sharing a Twitter announcement here, but Bookforum posted there that its current issue is to be its last. It's a real hit to the literary journalism world because Bookforum had its own independent vision and gave writers (including me) plenty of freedom in which to essay/assay away. If you were not a reader, trust me that a distinct, wide-ranging quality venue for literary discussion is being lost.
