Bulb-forcing pots on a winter window sill. White hyacinths are just about to bloom in three terra cotta pots, and a white milk glass planter has shoots from another bulb starting to sprout.

Two shelves filled with glass hyacinth vases. On the top shelf the vases are in shades of blue and green, and the bottom shelf has vases of red and blue. A couple of glass paperweights are tucked in among the vases. The vases are used primarily for hyacinth forcing in the winter months.

Paperwhites. They can get tall and unruly, but did you know that growing them in isopropyl alcohol (70%) can help stunt their growth? Place the bulbs on stones, add water and wait for about 1" of greenery to appear. Pour off the water, add 1 part alcohol to 10 parts water and use this to just cover the roots.

The roots of the paperwhites can be seen growing in the water, between the pebbles.Growing paperwhites in a water-alcohol mixture helps reduce the height of the plants so they are not as likely to topple over when blooming.Sometimes I'll use Leca pearls for bulb forcing instead of stones, as pictured here. You can see the roots growing in the bottom of the vase, but there's only a small amount of the water-alcohol mix in this vase. Just enough to keep the roots hydrated.
